Similar to the video games, the Pokémon anime showcases many different trainers and gym leaders. Some trainers prefer a varied team, catching and training lots of different Pokémon. Others choose to focus on a single type of Pokémon and become experts in that area.
Throughout the Pokémon anime, Water-type trainers have consistently proven their strength. Many fans first learned what a skilled Water-type trainer could do by watching Misty travel with Ash. Here are some of the most impressive Water-type trainers the series has showcased.
Juan
Juan, the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City, is known for being very polite. However, don’t mistake his kindness for weakness – he’s a highly skilled trainer, as any Gym Leader should be.
Ash’s battle with Juan was incredibly tough. Juan’s Water-type Pokémon really tested Ash’s team, and his Milotic was a particularly strong opponent, even matching up well against Ash’s Pikachu. Although Ash ultimately won the Gym battle, it took a lot of effort and determination.
Crasher Wake
Gym Leaders are a diverse bunch, with some being quite normal and others much more eccentric. Crasher Wake definitely falls into the eccentric category. As the Gym Leader of Pastoria City in the Sinnoh region, he specializes in Water-type Pokémon and boasts a small team that packs a serious punch.
Crasher Wake’s Pokémon team includes a powerful Gyarados, a resilient Quagsire, and a skilled Floatzel. His Gyarados impressively endured a direct Thunderbolt from Pikachu, and Quagsire was notoriously difficult to defeat. Floatzel, Wake’s strongest Pokémon, presented Ash with one of his toughest battles in the Sinnoh region, excelling at both defense and finding opportunities to strike.
Lana
Lana used to go to Pokémon School with Ash on Melemele Island. Though she may be new to battling, she’s already achieved a lot. She made it to the top eight trainers at the Manalo Conference, showing she’s a skilled and up-and-coming Pokémon trainer.

Lana’s Pokémon team is relatively small and includes Pokémon of various types, not just Water-types. Her two main Pokémon are a powerfully trained Primarina – proven during her battle with Guzma’s Golisopod – and an Eevee named Sandy. She also uses a Lapras for transportation. However, Lana is most known for something other than battling: she was able to calm down a very angry Kyogre, demonstrating her skill with Water-type Pokémon.
Nessa
Nessa isn’t featured in the main Pokémon anime, but she’s a character in the online series Pokémon: Twilight Wings. As the Gym Leader of Hulbury, she’s considered one of the most powerful Water-type Pokémon trainers in the Galar region.
In this episode of ONA, we see Nessa struggling after her loss to Milo in the Champion Cup. While the story focuses on her journey to find balance between her responsibilities as a Gym Leader and her modeling career, it also highlights her past successes as a highly-ranked trainer in the region.
Misty
Misty was one of the first friends to travel with Ash, and she’s become a popular character thanks to everything she’s achieved. As the Gym Leader of Cerulean City, she battles challengers hoping to earn the Cascade Badge with her powerful team of Water-type Pokémon.
Misty’s main team of Pokémon includes Goldeen, Horsea, Corsola, and a Luvdisc named Caserin. However, when she travels, she uses many different Water-type Pokémon, with Starmie, Psyduck, and Politoed being particularly strong. Her most powerful Pokémon is Gyarados, which can even Mega Evolve and has battled well against Ash and Pikachu.
Siebold
The Elite Four are known for being incredibly strong trainers, and Siebold from the Kalos region definitely fits that description. He’s a skilled and self-assured trainer who doesn’t accept just any battle – he only chooses to fight trainers who truly impress him with their power.
I’m always amazed by Siebold’s Blastoise! It’s the only Pokémon we ever see him use, but honestly, it’s all he needs. That Blastoise is incredible – it can Mega Evolve into Mega Blastoise and absolutely dominate. It even took down Alain’s Mega Charizard X, and Alain is a seriously top-tier trainer! It really highlights just how skilled Siebold is as a Pokémon master.
Wallace
Wallace is considered a top Water-type trainer and one of the most powerful trainers in the entire anime. Although he previously lost his championship title to Steven, he remains a highly skilled and impressive competitor.
Wallace primarily uses three Pokémon in the anime: Walrein, Swampert, and especially his Milotic, which is his strongest. While Walrein and Swampert are powerful, Wallace relies most on his Milotic. It’s both graceful and strong, perfectly fitting Wallace’s battling style, and consistently proves to be a difficult opponent.
