Key Takeaways
- Daredevil and The Punisher from Netflix Marvel shows join MCU, but not Agents of SHIELD.
- Daredevil: Born Again hinted at continuing story elements.
- Marvel editor-in-chief stated Agents of SHIELD wouldn’t return yet.
As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I’ve been through the highs and lows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). I still remember the excitement when Agents of SHIELD premiered back in 2013, hoping it would be the glue connecting all the films together. However, over the years, it seems like my beloved SHIELD agents have been left out in the cold, while their Netflix counterparts got a second chance with Daredevil: Born Again.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Daredevil and The Punisher are set to make their grand entrances into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it seems that one beloved TV show from the pre-Disney Plus era won’t be joining them any time soon: Agents of SHIELD.
Starting in 2013, Agents of SHIELD aired on ABC for seven seasons before ending in 2020. Simultaneously, Marvel Television produced several Netflix series, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. However, when Marvel Television merged with Marvel Studios under the leadership of Kevin Feige in 2019, all the Netflix shows had already been canceled, and Agents of SHIELD was nearing its conclusion.
Many supporters had wished that the series “Agents of SHIELD” might make a comeback, or maybe some characters from the show such as Chloe Bennet’s Quake could reappear. Regrettably, Marvel’s editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski shared some discouraging news concerning the revival of “Agents of SHIELD”. During a talk at Osaka Comic Con (via The Popverse), Cebulski commended the series but expressed uncertainty about its potential reappearance.
Currently, there aren’t any definite plans set for the continuation of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, a highly acclaimed series that many cherish.
This news might be disheartening yet not entirely unexpected. It’s been widely acknowledged that the TV series, Agents of SHIELD, has always maintained a degree of distance from Marvel Studios. While the Netflix shows had a tenuous link to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), characters would occasionally refer to Avengers team members in an oddly casual manner like ‘the green guy’ or ‘the guy with the hammer’, Agents of SHIELD, however, was officially recognized as an MCU series. It made significant attempts to connect to the movies by incorporating characters such as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and referencing storylines like the demise of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yet, the Marvel Studios films mostly overlooked Agents of SHIELD and the Netflix shows. Following the integration of the TV division into Marvel Studios, the company hinted at developments that strongly suggested that Agents of SHIELD, along with other Netflix and ABC Marvel series, were not part of the MCU’s official canon.
Indeed, just like how Marvel Studios appears to have reconsidered their initial stance with “Daredevil: Born Again”, it’s possible that they might do the same for some of the other Netflix shows. Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation yet about whether the events from these series are still considered canon, the leaked trailer for “Daredevil: Born Again” suggests that certain storylines from the original series could be incorporated. As for “Agents of SHIELD”, it remains to be seen if it will follow suit, given the ongoing nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its current focus on the Multiverse Saga.
Agents of Shield is available on Disney Plus.
