As a dedicated fan of One Piece, I’ve embarked on a journey that mirrors the adventures of Luffy and his crew, albeit without the sea-faring or sword-wielding. Over the years, I’ve found myself captivated by the intricate web of mysteries that Oda Sensei weaves into the storyline. One such enigma is the Red Line, a seemingly innocuous geographical feature that has sparked countless debates among the fanbase.
The realm of “One Piece” is captivatingly complex, drawing interest not just from the thrilling journeys embarked upon by the Straw Hat crew, but also due to the intricate details and enigmatic nature of its locations and overall structure. This world is partitioned into four distinct seas: North Blue, South Blue, East Blue, and West Blue, each teeming with diverse islands and distinct cultures. The Grand Line, a stretch of water, initially separates these seas, while another boundary forms due to the circular continent formation encircling the planet, called the Red Line.
In this piece, I’m diving deep into a colossal, enigmatic region that encircles the world of One Piece. This area towers above every other landmass except for the floating sky islands themselves. With Egghead’s transmission from Vegapunk revealing the Earth is sinking, speculation has run rampant about the function of the Red Line and why its annihilation is necessary.

In the story, the Red Line was introduced right from the start as a colossal circular landmass encircling the globe. This continental belt serves as a boundary between East Blue and South Blue on one side, and North Blue and West Blue on the other. Moreover, it separates the Grand Line into two halves, with the latter half, known as the ‘New World’, being particularly hazardous. The New World is rumored to be home to the powerful pirates, such as the Emperors of the Sea, who establish their strongholds and claim territories there.
Despite its expansive size, this continent is primarily empty because it is ruled by the Celestial Dragons who consider themselves superior and keep common folk away. High above the Sabaody Archipelago, at the Red Line, lies Marijoa – the capital city of the Celestial Dragons, where they claim to rule the world from.
The entire continent derives its name from the robust red rock that forms its entirety, diving approximately 10,000 meters beneath the ocean surface where it meets the ocean floor. Remarkably, this Red Continent doesn’t adhere to a fixed weather pattern, resembling diverse islands on the sea, with varying climates ranging from colder and hotter regions in different areas.
Although usually sailing through the Navy outposts on the Red Line is the only known way to reach the New World, there are alternative routes; one notable example being a detour beneath the continent leading to Fishman Island, which eventually exits into the New World from the opposite side. Additionally, Reverse Island serves as an unconventional passage for those within the 4 Blues to navigate through the Red Line and access the Grand Line.
Why The Red Line Needs To Go
A Theory That States The Need To Destroy The Red Line
Initially, when the Red Line was introduced in the series, fans began to suspect that this continent might not be entirely normal. Over time, these suspicions were subtly but effectively strengthened as Oda provided hints about the mysterious nature of the Red Line and its potentially dangerous presence.
This hypothesis suggests that the Red Line was an external entity which, in ancient times, separated the world into four distinct regions instead of one vast ocean, supporting Sanji’s idea of the All-Blue. Towards the end of the Void Century, either just prior or subsequent to Joyboy’s defeat, it is possible that Imu and their associates manipulated this landmass as a means to isolate all the oceans from one another. They might have even merged multiple islands into a single, enormous continent in order to achieve this separation.
Our world is going to sink into the ocean!
It’s not definitively proven yet, but there are some compelling indications that this event may transpire. Initially, it was suggested that the Red Line exhibits highly unpredictable weather conditions, with dramatic variations across different regions. For instance, a specific stretch of land might resemble a hot, summer environment, while just adjacent to it, you could find a frozen winter tundra. This structure is remarkably similar to the diverse weather patterns experienced on the Grand Line’s numerous islands, each island having its own unique climate irrespective of the surrounding temperatures.
It’s uncertain how Imu could pull off such a feat, but there’s suspicion that the enigmatic Ancient Weapon, Uranus, might have been involved. Unlike Pluton and Poseidon, details about this particular Ancient Weapon are deliberately shrouded in secrecy to an even greater extent. The World Government hypothesizes that Uranus is the only one among them currently under their control.
Additionally, the Reverse Mountain Arc introduced us to Laboon, a massive Island Whale who turned out to be a significant member of Brook’s former crew. Interestingly, Laboon would often charge his head into the Red Line, a behavior that fans hadn’t given much thought until after the Straw Hats left Fishman Island. Upon encountering other Island Whales, they noticed that many bore similar scars, suggesting that this was a common practice among them.
This sparked a theory that the Red Line is unnatural and the Island Whales instinctually know this, so they ram their heads into the formation in the vain hope of breaking it to return the world to how it was ages ago. Moreover, Vegapunk revealed that while the world is slowly sinking, the biggest increase in water level came at the end of the Void Century, which implies that much of the world sank because of the mere presence of this continent blocking it off into 4 parts and increasing water levels thusly.
In conclusion, it seems that the heroes’ ultimate task could be to eliminate the Red Line. Having retrieved the fabled treasure of Joyboy and Roger, Luffy and his companions are expected to possess the Ancient Weapons. It is speculated that these weapons will eventually be used by them to dismantle the Red Line, thus restoring unity to the world once more, turning it into the elusive One Piece.
