As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, the news about Overwatch: Classic brings back a wave of nostalgia that is hard to put into words. Eight years ago, I was just another player jumping into this fresh, new world called Overwatch. The original 6v6 team-based action was a game changer for me, and it seems like Blizzard is giving us a chance to relive those glory days.
Overwatch is bringing back team battles with 6 players per side, labeled as “Overwatch: Classic,” starting November 12 and running through December 2. This fresh gameplay mode will be accessible to all players.
As a thrilled fan, I couldn’t help but get swept up by the latest news that dropped, accompanied by an enticing sneak peek video for the upcoming mode. It was a delight to see the familiar faces of the original cast, learn about the exciting game modes, and catch a glimpse of the new maps that are in store!
Approximately eight years ago, Blizzard introduced a brand-new gaming universe named Overwatch via a blog post. This realm, tied together by a common theme of safeguarding the future, drew in millions to explore fresh characters such as a time-traveling adventurer, a former eSports champion transformed into a mech pilot, and a genetically engineered Moon-originated gorilla.
In Overwatch 2, you’ll soon have the chance to revisit old memories through a set of temporary events. These events will let you play with the original characters, their skills, and maps, all while enjoying the classic 6 versus 6 multiplayer gameplay that you used to love.
In Overwatch: Classic, you’ll get to play with 21 characters that were available when the game initially launched. This mode transports you back to Overwatch version 1.0, from May 2016, and includes the original abilities for each hero. The heroes will be categorized according to their initial classes, but in this mode, the No Hero Limits rule applies, allowing a whole team to consist of the same characters.
Regarding maps, all 12 original maps will be available along with the four original game modes.
Currently, Blizzard is not planning to make Overwatch: Classic the permanent solution for bringing back 6v6 gameplay.
In upcoming seasons, Blizzard plans to conduct individual 6 vs. 6 test phases specifically to collect player opinions and assess enthusiasm towards this game format.
