As a seasoned explorer of the digital frontier, I’ve come across my fair share of hidden gems and strange curiosities nestled within the vast landscapes of video games. However, none have left me quite as bewildered and intrigued as the enigmatic secrets hidden within the wilds of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar Games is known for hiding obscure, enigmatic, and occasionally spine-tingling Easter eggs in their open-world games. This wasn’t any different with the most ambitious open-world game they’ve ever made – Red Dead Redemption 2. Scattered throughout the five states of RDR2 are a variety of mysteries hidden within the wilderness, ranging from amusing Easter eggs to bone-chilling mysteries that might or might not be resolved.
In the world of Red Dead Redemption 2, West Elizabeth stands out among other regions as it’s the only area where Arthur can initially access only parts of it. The region of New Austin is off-limits until you take on the role of John in the epilogue, but West Elizabeth opens up for exploration once the gang leaves the mountains during Chapter 1. However, even with this initial accessibility, there are numerous hidden secrets and mysteries within West Elizabeth that many players might have overlooked during their first playthrough of Rockstar’s game.
7 Giant Skeleton
For centuries, tales about colossal human-like beings, such as Goliath and Paul Bunyan, have been a common thread in folklore. It appears that Rockstar has tapped into this theme and incorporated a being of immense size – or perhaps a remnant of one – into their game.
The legendary figure, distinguishable from the cave-dwelling giant in Ambarino, is now deceased, and his skeletal remains can be found atop Mount Shann. These remains appear to be a nod to several manipulated images of supposed giant burial sites that have occasionally trended on the internet since its early days. Such photos have ignited theories suggesting that giants may have covertly walked alongside humans for centuries, fueling speculation and intrigue.
6 Pagan Ritual Site
The game Red Dead Redemption 2 has a history with strange happenings. Delving into the secrets of Lemoyne, it appears that the abandoned town of Pleasance was likely deserted due to cult-related activities. Moreover, it seems that questionable events extend as far as West Elizabeth’s outskirts.
Near the edge of Owanjila Lake’s northern-western perimeter, where the map practically ends, lies a grisly spectacle that leaves no room for doubt about occult practices. Here, you’ll find both human and animal remains, peculiar stone pillars, and cryptic symbols – all pointing to a deeply disturbing event. The game allows you to pick up an animal skull mask as a keepsake, but it offers no additional hints about the perpetrators of this crime. It might be that the Pleasance cult’s influence extends further than most care to acknowledge.
5 Mysterious Obelisk
On Mount Shann, the ritual site isn’t the sole hint of cult activity. Instead, a substantial and intricately carved stone pillar, seemingly misplaced amidst the raw, untouched landscapes of West Elizabeth, can be found only a short distance north from the gruesome scene.
In the game, you won’t find a clear explanation about what the obelisk is or who placed it there, but considering its position near the ritual site in Red Dead Redemption 2, it seems reasonable to assume they are connected in some way. The only hint about this enigmatic tower’s history is an inscription at its base that says “Hora Fugit, Ne Tardes,” which translates roughly to “Time Flies, Don’t be Late.” This inscription also includes a date, 1771, suggesting the group causing the unusual events in Red Dead Redemption 2 has been active for over a century.
4 Flying Machine Wreckage
It’s widely recognized that the Wright Brothers made history with the first successful manned flight in December 1903. However, it appears that another daring pioneer attempted something similar a few years earlier. Unfortunately, it seems their effort did not yield success.
Following the northern part of Little Creek River, explorers may stumble upon the scorched and shattered remnants of an ancient aviator and their wrecked flying apparatus. Similar to many hidden tales in West Elizabeth, this serves as a singular instance of environmental narrative storytelling. However, players are free to imagine their own account of the events that transpired at this site.
3 The Devil Cave
To the northwest of Mount Shann lies a humble cave entrance. It’s rather inconspicuous and doesn’t appear to be anything special from the outside. However, adventurous players who delve within will encounter one of the most bizarre and offbeat Non-Player Characters (NPCs) found in Red Dead Redemption 2.
In the depths of the cavern, if you advance far enough, a previously unheard voice will order the player to retreat. These commands will persist until the speaker declares himself as none other than the devil. Even when this final attempt to scare off the player doesn’t work, the character will ultimately reveal his true identity – a reclusive hermit yearning for solitude. Unfortunately, the player can’t engage with him further due to his position on a ledge, but the eerie ambiance of the cave and his Satanic claims make this one of the most haunting encounters within the game.
2 Stuffed Gorilla
In the game “Red Dead Redemption 2”, many hidden secrets and Easter eggs have an eerie or deliberately disquieting feel, while others are simply puzzling in a way that leaves players pondering for extended periods – even days on end. One such example is the taxidermied gorilla found at Mount Shann.
In a damaged shipping container lies a preserved great ape, suggesting it might have been an artwork that got misplaced during transport. This raises questions about its intended destination and purchaser. Since there’s a taxidermist in Big Valley, it’s plausible this gorilla is one of his creations that went astray en route to a buyer. The choice of a gorilla by Rockstar could be a playful reference to their tradition of hiding Bigfoot references in their games, although the exact reason remains unclear at this time.
1 Native American Burial Grounds
In the narrative of “Red Dead Redemption 2”, the Wapiti tribe significantly contribute. Their sacred burial sites can be discovered in a tranquil open space within West Elizabeth. Unlike many films such as “Pet Sematary” or “Poltergeist” that portray Native burial grounds as eerie or frightening, Rockstar presents the Wapiti’s resting place as a serene and reflective location.
The area showcases a stone cross constructed from tiny pebbles, encompassed by a ring of larger stones. At its heart rests an exceptional Stone Hatchet weapon. Circling this ring are human and animal skulls affixed to poles decorated with various ornaments such as feathers, colorful strings, and antlers. Wooden frameworks covered in animal furs add finishing touches to the tableau.
