As someone who spent countless hours in the heat of battle during the golden age of Overwatch, I can hardly contain my excitement for this upcoming event! The return of Overwatch: Classic is like a long-lost friend coming home – and it’s bringing all the nostalgia I missed from the good ol’ days.
Ever since Fortnite’s OG Season comeback and Blizzard releasing World of Warcraft Classic, there’s been a lot of buzz about which other multiplayer games deserve a “classic” makeover. One game frequently mentioned is Overwatch, and fans can look forward to the original Overwatch, featuring 6v6 open queue, making a comeback in Overwatch: Classic.
From November 12th until December 2nd, we’re bringing back Overwatch Classic! This special event transports us back to the original quickplay mode as it was in version 1.0. You’ll be able to play with 21 classic heroes (unfortunately, Ana won’t be among them), and there will be a selection of 12 maps. Plus, all hero abilities have been updated based on patches since then.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but see this temporary event as more than just a fleeting opportunity. It appears to be an intentional move, aimed at gathering valuable feedback from players like us, which in turn influences the developers’ decisions about upcoming updates and patches – much like Blizzard does with their limited-time game modes.
However, if you’re yearning for a taste of the past with Overwatch, it appears this event is just what you need. It takes you down memory lane with features like scatter Arrow, powerful Mercy ultimates, and Torbjorn distributing armor to teammates – something we might have forgotten about, right?
Having clocked hundreds of hours on Overwatch during its debut in 2016-2017, much of it feels reminiscent. However, for those unfamiliar, numerous aspects might seem foreign when contrasted with the current version of Overwatch 2.
Initially, the “Assault” game mode is making a comeback following its absence in OW2. Known as Control Points, this mode involves attackers capturing one control point initially and then securing victory by capturing the second. Meanwhile, defenders strive to protect each control point throughout the process.
In the exciting addition of classic maps like Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, and Volskaya Industries, it’s important to note that this gameplay mode presents a significant change compared to Overwatch 2’s contemporary maps. Instead of the usual back-and-forth dynamics, the defending team finds it challenging to reclaim substantial territory.
In Overwatch 2, you’ll find that the leftover Control, Escort, and Hybrid game modes are all available to play. Consequently, these modes won’t reappear in their original form from Overwatch 1.0, but they will be similar to their updated versions within Overwatch 2. Rest assured, you can still enjoy many classic matches on Ilios, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, King’s Row, and several other maps.
It also should be noted that the entire mode seeks to return to this classic era aesthetic, so only the original Overwatch 1 skins will be usable.
Returning Rules And Hero Abilities
The real magic of this update comes from hero ability reversals, 6v6, and open queue. Even though many of these have changed for the better, they are an essential reminder of how far we’ve come from the original release (or how far we’ve strayed).
Over the recent gaming seasons, there’s been a lot of talk about 6v6 and open queue in Overwatch 2. Critics pounced when Blizzard shifted to 5v5, also complaining about strict role assignments. However, recent updates have opened up opportunities for fresh game modes, pushing the boundaries Blizzard had self-imposed.
Going back to the classic 6v6 format in Overwatch may reveal to Blizzard just how much the game has been affected by certain strategies that are now considered “imbalanced” or “broken”. Players might experiment with these broken meta strategies, such as Goats, and even come up with humorous team compositions like a whole team of Winstons using their bubble shields frantically.
Enthusiasts are also looking forward to the reappearance of hero skills in this latest update. Heroes such as Symmetra, Torbjorn, and Sombra have all experienced significant modifications to their skill sets. So if you’re a fan of these original heroes, this update offers an enjoyable opportunity to revisit those past experiences.
I’m eager to explore the revamped versions of Cassidy’s and Hanzo’s kits, my go-to characters from the initial release. These updates, although minor, have made a significant impact since the original patch. It’ll be incredibly satisfying to knock someone out with a flash, and the iconic scatter arrow will regain its full power once more.
With great anticipation, keep in mind that both the classic Bastion kit and Mercy’s ult will be returning. So, let’s look forward to revisiting the original Overwatch experience, and hopefully, you share our excitement about resurrecting the anger and frustration that have since faded away.
