A Resident Evil 5 Remake Can’t Leave One Encounter By The Wayside

A Resident Evil 5 Remake Can't Leave One Encounter By The Wayside

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the Resident Evil series has been a constant companion in my gaming journey. From the terrifying mansions of Raccoon City to the sprawling African landscapes of Resident Evil 5, each game has left an indelible mark on me.

For years now, the evergreen “Resident Evil” series has experienced something of a revival. This resurgence is largely attributed to the successful re-imaginings of classic games, with many speculating that 2009’s “Resident Evil 5” could be next in this series of remakes. However, since the release of the 2023 remake of “Resident Evil 4,” Capcom has been tight-lipped about future “Resident Evil” games. As a result, while there’s no official announcement that a remake of “Resident Evil 5” is in development, it seems highly probable.

Not only does Capcom’s string of successful remakes make it likely that they will continue with Resident Evil 5, but also because RE5 appears to be the game most in need of an update. The game retains the semi-tank controls of its predecessor, but while RE4 uses its outdated control scheme to enhance fear and tension, the combination of limited movement and large, fast-paced enemy encounters in RE5 can feel awkward and uncomfortable rather than scary. Additionally, the game is marred by the bland color palette that was common during the seventh console generation, making it visually unappealing for most modern players. Problems like these, along with some other quirks and glitches, could potentially be addressed in a modern remake.

Resident Evil 5’s Remake Shouldn’t Pass Up the Chance to Improve the Ndesu Fight

The Ndesu Boss Battle Is One of Resident Evil 5’s Low Points

Drawing influence from rail-shooter games like The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles of Resident Evil 5, the Ndesu boss battle towards the end of Chapter 2 stands out as a representation of some of its major issues. While it offers a visually stunning show with explosions and an intimidating monster to defeat, the gameplay is uninspired. Players are confined to positions at the back of a stationary vehicle, and defeating the Ndesu becomes a monotonous task of managing gatling gun overheating and occasionally targeting Majini that appear, which can be more frustrating than entertaining.

Similar to many aspects of Resident Evil 5, the Ndesu encounter is significantly more effective when played cooperatively. One player can focus on managing secondary threats, allowing the other to concentrate on defeating the boss. However, even in this mode, it still falls short of meeting its full potential.

A Resident Evil 5 Remake Could Realize the Full Potential of the Ndesu Fight

In a hypothetical remake of Resident Evil 5 (RE5), the encounter with the Ndesu in Chapter 2 could be given a fresh take, offering greater player freedom and interaction instead of feeling underwhelming as it currently does. By modernizing RE5, the fight against the Ndesu might be transformed into a less linear experience, similar to the El Gigante encounters in RE4, where players have more room to explore and strategize within the battle arena. This change would introduce an element of unpredictability, allowing for various strategies, maneuvers, and potential exploits, thus resulting in a more dynamic setpiece overall.

Maybe the reimagined battle maintains some features from the initial clash, such as car-mounted gatling guns, but with an innovative twist. Players could utilize the gun’s destructive force and stopping power, yet lingering too long on these mounted guns might leave them exposed. If experiencing Chris in this remake is even close to enjoying Leon in RE4‘s reimagining, then the increased mobility and adaptability would significantly enhance the excitement of this encounter.

It’s intriguing to consider what Capcom might do with the remake of Resident Evil 5. While many have fond memories of it, it’s also seen as a turning point for the series that wasn’t quite up to par before the fresh start offered by Resident Evil 7. There’s certainly potential for enhancements in the remake, and while it might keep the action-oriented gameplay from the original, it should aim to discard its less favorable elements that were typical of that time period.
