As a long-time gamer who’s been through the trenches of many digital battlefields, I’ve seen games come and go, but some manage to hold their ground, even after years have passed. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is one such game that has stood the test of time, taking us back to the tumultuous era of the Vietnam War.

Over seven years post its launch, Antimatter Games and Tripwire Interactive have unexpectedly rolled out a new update for their multiplayer tactical shooter, “Rising Storm 2: Vietnam”. This game is a direct successor to the 2013 title, “Rising Storm”, which was an independent expansion of “Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad”. Unlike its predecessors set in World War II, “Rising Storm 2” transports players to pivotal sites and conflicts of the Vietnam War.

For almost two decades, the Vietnam War served as a major conflict during the Cold War, its impacts continuing to echo in our contemporary world. In contrast, the multiplayer game Rising Storm 2 offers an intense experience, with up to 64 players taking on roles from both sides and their respective allies, engaging in asymmetrical warfare. This game encompasses six distinct armies: North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) and National Liberation Front (Viet Cong), Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), United States Army and Marine Corps, and Australian Army. Upon release, it featured over 20 battlefields, 50 weapons, traps, tunnels, napalm, and flyable helicopters.

Even though Rising Storm 2 is seven years old, it continues to have a dedicated fan base who were taken aback when they learned that developers Tripwire and Antimatter had rolled out a fresh update, version 1.6.2, for the game. Primarily, the update enhances server performance, but its main focus lies on improving Rising Storm 2’s proximity Voice Over IP (VoIP) features. This involves ensuring that the system operates smoothly, enabling teammates to communicate effectively.

The update resolves two concerns: first, it stops others from continuing to chat even after leaving a server or concluding a game. Secondly, it fixes complications with muting, like unintended noise from other players or previously-muted individuals regaining the ability to talk upon rejoining the same server. Additionally, the Steam Client should now automatically recognize headset device settings.

The tactical shooter game, specifically Rising Storm 2, is currently enjoying a Very Positive rating on Steam following nearly 40,000 reviews, with some reviews coming in after Update 1.6.2 was released. Many players appreciate the game’s high level of realism, detailed maps, and immersive gunplay, where having a skilled commander in Rising Storm 2 can significantly impact the outcome of battles – whether it leads to victory or defeat. However, some users have noted that due to the game’s age, the servers are not always populated, and the update did not resolve several minor bugs present since the launch.

In the year 2019, it became public knowledge that a game, serving as an alternate-universe spiritual sequel to Rising Storm 2, was being developed. Dubbed ’83, this upcoming title is set during World War III and experienced some challenges which led Antimatter Games to pass it on to Blue Dot Games. Following a closed alpha in December 2023 and a period of quiet, Blue Dot announced in November 2024 that they had secured additional funding, putting the development of ’83 back on schedule once more.
