From the groundbreaking success of Gantz to the captivating narrative of Inuyashiki, Oku’s unique storytelling has left an indelible mark on the world of manga and anime.

In the latest edition of Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine, it has been announced that renowned manga creator Hiroya Oku is set to start a new project soon. After wrapping up Gigant in 2021, which followed his completion of Gantz, Oku has been actively involved in various manga productions. As the final chapters of Gigant approached, he frequently posted updates about them on his social media platforms.

From the years 2000 to 2013, the series known as Gantz was published weekly in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine, culminating in a total of 37 collected volumes. In the United States, Dark Horse Comics took up the publication rights for the series. The storyline of Gantz led to a 26-episode anime adaptation, which can be streamed on Crunchyroll, as well as a CGI film titled Gantz:O, multiple Japanese live-action adaptations, and two spin-off manga. It was also announced in 2021 that a live-action film adaptation is underway.

Gantz involves the character Kei Kurono, who finds himself enmeshed in a brutal post-death game where survival hinges on killing aliens. This manga/anime was widely popular among Japanese and global audiences, earning considerable acclaim during its time. Creator Oku expresses that the upcoming series is still simmering in his mind, and he eagerly anticipates bringing it to life through his artwork. However, a release date has yet to be announced.

Following the completion of Gantz, Oku delved into Inuyashiki between 2014 and 2017, producing a total of 10 volumes that were later translated into English by Kodansha. This series was also brought to life as an anime adaptation, debuting in 2018 on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll. The narrative centers around a 58-year-old man disillusioned with his life, who learns he has terminal cancer during a period of emotional turmoil. In the midst of this crisis, he is enveloped by a strange light and awakens as a machine. He chooses to employ his newfound powers for altruistic acts, yet the source of his transformed physique remains unexplained.

2017 saw Oku commence his latest creation, “Gigant,” which was completed in 2021 across ten volumes. Seven Seas is responsible for its English publication. The narrative revolves around Rei Yokoyamada, a teen aspiring filmmaker, whose life takes an unexpected turn when he finds out that adult film actress Papico, whom he admires, resides nearby. Their encounter could mark the beginning of a romantic relationship, but things take a peculiar twist when she attempts to aid an elderly man, leading to something bizarre and grand in scale, reminiscent of “gigant” proportions.

Although details about the upcoming manga are scarce, Hiroya Oku’s unique art style promises an exciting release. Fans eagerly anticipating fresh content since the conclusion of Gigant can now look forward to something new on the horizon.
