What Death Stranding’s Xbox Release Could Mean for OD

What Death Stranding's Xbox Release Could Mean for OD

As a long-time fan who has witnessed Kojima’s metamorphosis from a PlayStation stalwart to a multi-platform maestro, I find this recent turn of events incredibly intriguing. The unexpected release of Death Stranding on Xbox and the subsequent price drop is akin to stumbling upon a rare collectible at a garage sale.

Kojima Productions and 505 Games took everyone by surprise earlier this month when they simultaneously launched and unveiled the Xbox Series X/S version of Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. The fact that the game was also offered with a 50% discount at its launch on Xbox platforms made the surprise even greater. Typically priced at $40 on Microsoft’s platform, this popular game is currently available to Xbox players for just $20.

Initially, Death Stranding was an intellectual property owned by PlayStation; the game was developed, published, and released by Sony itself due to their ownership of the console. However, it has since been made available on Xbox platforms as Kojima Productions recently purchased the rights to Death Stranding from Sony Interactive Entertainment. Although no official announcements have been made yet, this shift in platform for Kojima Productions could hint at future releases of their other titles, such as OD, on additional consoles.

Death Stranding Coming to Xbox Makes a PlayStation Port of OD More Likely

OD is Hideo Kojima’s First Collaborative Effort with Xbox Game Studios

For the very first time in his career, game creator Hideo Kojima is collaborating with Xbox instead of PlayStation on a new project. One of the games being developed by Kojima Productions is titled OD, and it’s set to be published by Xbox Game Studios. Although Kojima’s collaboration with this first-party publisher was initially announced in 2022, the game itself, OD, wasn’t officially unveiled until The Game Awards in 2023.

At this time, there isn’t a lot of information available on the upcoming game titled OD. Kojima Productions has disclosed that it is a horror genre title and boasts an impressive ensemble cast. As of now, we are uncertain about what the gameplay will entail for OD, but leaked videos from 2022 hint at a dual perspective system, combining both first-person and third-person viewpoints.

As per Kojima, the upcoming project, referred to as OD, is expected to employ Xbox’s cloud gaming tech to pioneer an unprecedented type of gameplay experience, which could be better described as a fresh medium.

OD May Be an Xbox Exclusive at Launch, But It Will Probably Come to PlayStation at Some Point

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate about the release platforms for the upcoming game, OD. While there’s no official confirmation yet, it seems plausible that it will initially be exclusive to Xbox Series X/S and PC. However, considering Microsoft’s recent moves towards cross-platform exclusivity, it’s not entirely impossible that OD might find its way onto rival consoles like the PS5 and Nintendo Switch down the line. In fact, Microsoft has already shown a willingness to bring some of their first-party games to these platforms, with four titles already making the jump and more on the horizon. So, while I’m eagerly anticipating OD’s debut on Xbox and PC, I can’t help but wonder if we might see it on the PS5 soon after that.

In early 2024, Microsoft will transfer the games Grounded, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves, as well as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages (two more Microsoft-developed titles) to PlayStation and/or Nintendo consoles.

Regardless of Microsoft’s stance on Xbox exclusivity, On Death might have made its way onto PlayStation consoles anyway. The presence of Death Stranding on Xbox, despite Sony’s significant involvement, supports this idea. It appears that Kojima is aiming to distribute his future games across multiple platforms. Additionally, if Kojima Productions holds the intellectual property rights for On Death, as they do with Death Stranding, there’s a higher likelihood of the game appearing on PlayStation 5 in the future.
