As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I must say that LEGO Horizon Adventures has truly captured my heart and left me in awe. Growing up, I never imagined a game based on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series would be made, let alone one featuring those charming little block-headed heroes. But here we are!
A LEGO game base on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series wasn’t a game I ever thought I would see, and like the Remastered version of Zero Dawn, it’s not something I thought we needed. It isn’t exactly as big as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter, but that’s the thing about LEGO, they make any property feel new and exciting, telling old stories in different ways. LEGO Horizon Adventures doesn’t have that familiarity other titles featuring block-headed heroes, but it sure is enjoyable, with plenty to keep you occupied.
LEGO Horizon Adventures narrates the tale of Aloy, an outcast from the Nora tribe who unexpectedly transforms into their long-awaited hero. Throughout her life, Aloy has been a formidable fighter who’s faced hardships, yet Studio Gobo successfully infuses humor throughout the narrative, adding witty remarks and references to the series that frequently brought me amusement. For instance, one joke poked fun at the Nora Tribe for naming everything after their ‘mother’, which I found particularly charming and brought a smile to my face.
A significant portion of gameplay involves assuming control over characters like Aloy, Varl, or Teersa, engaging in combat with cultists and robotic dinosaurs. You’ll utilize your bow, a variety of gadgets, and the surroundings to defeat these foes. As you progress, additional weapons become accessible, such as a bow capable of firing multiple arrows simultaneously and traps that immobilize enemies. These weapons have a finite supply of ammunition, but like health restoratives, you can discover them scattered across the world.
True pleasure lies in the innovative way Guerrilla has infused tactical combat into their open-world escapades. Robots have vulnerable spots on their structures, striking these can deal greater harm. Certain foes carry explosive components, hitting these usually results in immediate destruction. Their attack patterns and abilities resemble the originals, but LEGO Horizon Adventures simplifies the experience, making it more approachable.
Fighting isn’t a leisurely stroll through a park. You might encounter several robots and cultists simultaneously, and some larger bosses may require quite a bit of time to weaken. You can use arrows to pass through bonfires or electric currents for fire and shock damage, and cold damage depending on the type of enemies and their vulnerabilities. Although it’s tough at times, there’s always the reward of obtaining a gold brick when you complete the level.
Gold bricks can be obtained through various methods, including completing levels, but the Community Board at Mother’s Heart offers diverse objectives, such as hosting a feast or destroying a specific number of machines with elemental damage. The hub world of Mother’s Heart transforms beyond merely serving as a transition point for new missions; as you progress, it expands and becomes increasingly customizable.
In LEGO Horizon Adventures, you’ll find numerous structures to explore, such as the enhancement hub where you can boost your weaponry and gadgets, and the previously mentioned town square. Aloy’s abode can be expanded with various additions like a chicken coop, and you can adorn the entire village with an assortment of items. Additionally, you have the liberty to customize your own dwelling, from placing a Thunderjaw on the rooftop to setting up a giant donut as decor. This game also features elements from titles like LEGO Ninjago and LEGO City in its decorations.
In LEGO Horizon Adventures, Aloy has the option to sport various outfits. Each outfit and upgrade requires studs to unlock or enhance, yet you’ll find yourself amassing a substantial amount of them during missions without needing to grind excessively or put in extra effort. This made spending the studs more enjoyable. Moreover, the game offers not only fun gameplay but also presents challenging additional tasks to keep things interesting.
Something truly astonished me: the extraordinary quality of the visuals. They bring the futuristic universe to life in an amazing way, particularly by using exceptional lighting that glimmers off the characters’ sleek yellow heads and garments. The gleam on the machines’ bodies is equally impressive, and each new one I saw left me speechless at how well it was designed. No matter where the setting, there’s intricate detail everywhere, and with no technical problems to disrupt my viewing experience, I could fully appreciate the stunning world presented here.
As a dedicated fan, I must say that LEGO Horizon Adventures, though not as grandiose as other LEGO titles, seamlessly adapts to the PS5 platform with its stunning visuals and smooth gameplay. The signature humor is woven throughout, and for those well-versed in Guerrilla’s epic series, there are countless nods hidden around every corner. Repetition might crop up occasionally, and some battles can overwhelm the screen with a multitude of enemies, but it remains one of the finest LEGO games ever launched.
