Sea of Stars Dawn of Equinox update released, adds co-op

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades under my belt, I must say that the Sea of Stars Dawn of Equinox update has piqued my interest like none other. The intricate details and thoughtful improvements in this game are reminiscent of those golden days when developers truly cared about their craft.

As a thrilled fan, I’m excited to share that the latest update for Sea of Stars, titled Dawn of Equinox, has just dropped! It brings a host of fresh features that are sure to enrich my gaming experience. Although it might not be the massive content expansion we’re eagerly anticipating in 2025, this update is certainly a treat in the meantime!

Thierry Boulanger (Sabotage Studio’s Creative Director) shared on the Official PlayStation Blog that apart from numerous bug fixes and minor tweaks, they included an extra pre-rendered cinematic scene as a bonus. Additionally, they updated the game’s initial hour by incorporating combat animations for the child versions of our heroes. This change enabled them to eliminate the flashback structure, as action sequences are now part of the introduction instead, which was regrettably left out during production.

The main updates are the 2.0 upgrade of combat, which adds the following:

Persistent Combination Points: Essentially, Combination Points will linger post-battle, making combo abilities far more versatile. This could mean initiating an attack more aggressively in standard encounters or offering additional choices for inflicting diverse types of damage when confronting locks.

Hidden Spell-Breaking Mechanisms: These are yet another intriguing addition that seems perfectly suited to the game. Essentially, Hidden Spell-Breaking Mechanisms introduce a fresh dynamic by challenging players to figure out how to shatter enemies’ spells upon initial encounters. Unlike traditional locks where the required damage types are clearly shown, these mechanisms keep the necessary actions hidden. This necessitates experimentation with various attacks to discover what will successfully break each mechanism. It’s important to note that this is specific to each enemy type and their individual spells, implying that progression toward unlocking Hidden Spell-Breaking Mechanisms is automatically saved in real-time.

As a fan, I’m thrilled about the local co-op feature that allows up to three of us to share control over a character in our party, making teamwork a breeze! The Creative Director shared some exciting details: “In combat, action begins when any player comes into contact with an enemy or projectile. Regardless of who’s controlling which character in the game world, we take turns executing actions randomly chosen from our preferred characters.” He also mentioned that during these moments, all players can collaborate by performing Team Blocks and Team Hits for additional benefits. For instance, if we all time a block perfectly simultaneously, the damage is always nullified! What an amazing way to enhance teamwork and fun in this game!

In the game’s introduction, both the prologue and the initial hour have been reworked. A fresh cinematic has been introduced, while the combat animations for the child forms of the heroes have been enhanced. According to Boulanger, this modification enabled us to abandon the flashback structure by incorporating action directly into the opening scene, which was regrettably not feasible during production.

Sea of Stars is out now for PC and consoles.
