Phil Spencer Confirms Xbox is Planning an Xbox Handheld, But It’s a Few Years Away

According to Phil Spencer, the head of gaming at Microsoft, there are plans underway for an Xbox-branded portable game console; however, it’s expected to hit shelves several years down the line.

In an exclusive chat with Bloomberg, I’m thrilled to share some exciting insider news! Apparently, our beloved company has been busy tinkering away at prototypes for a potential new handheld console. They’re brainstorming about the incredible features and functions this device might possess!

Spencer implied they anticipate taking action within the segment of the handheld console market.

In case you’re planning to save for purchasing this console shortly, Spencer clarified that such a device is unfortunately not expected for quite some time yet.

Nonetheless, rumors of Xbox’s next-generation console and a handheld device have been circulating for some time. In March 2024, Windows Central’s Jez Corden claimed that Xbox was already prototyping an Xbox handheld. Other rumors also circulated that Xbox could be planning to release its next-generation console sooner than PlayStation.

During the Xbox Two podcast, Corden mentioned, “I’m aware that they currently have prototypes for a handheld device.” Later on, he explained that these were new prototypes, distinct from the ones frequently discussed in the past.

Previously, Xbox unveiled their upcoming gaming console as both “uniquely superior” and “highly potent.” However, beyond generic phrases, the specifics of these claims are yet to be clarified.
