In Grime 2, you can unlock Talents to make your character stronger in both combat and defense. You’ll need to collect Hunt Pigment – known as Talent Points – through the Growth menu to access these new abilities.
This guide will show you how to get Hunt Pigments in Grime 2 to improve your character’s abilities. We’ll also recommend the best talents to unlock early on to help you survive in this action-packed metroidvania.
How to Unlock Talents in Grime 2
In Grime 2, you unlock Talents by collecting Molds. You get Molds by defeating enemies and taking their abilities – either by dashing at them after breaking their protective shield (Mold Ward) or by using the Grasp action to absorb them. Once you’ve absorbed 8 Molds, you’ll unlock your first set of Talents.
To improve their characters’ abilities, players will need to collect Hunt Pigments. These are dropped by tough, hidden bosses located throughout each area of the game. Each area has at least one of these bosses, so players will have to explore thoroughly to find them all.
Unlocking the first two tiers of talents only costs 1 Hunt Pigment each. However, starting with Tier 3, each talent requires 2 Hunt Pigments, making progression a little more challenging.
Plus, certain abilities, such as Force Dash and Dash Recovery, can be improved, and are really important for staying alive. We’ll now focus on which abilities you should unlock and upgrade as soon as possible.
Which Talents To Unlock & Upgrade First in Grime 2
Since a lot of the initial characters in Grime 2 specialize in parrying and dodging, we’ll be concentrating on those skills first.
It is possible to avoid developing those skills initially and prioritize others, but doing so will likely create difficulties for players, making it harder for them to survive and move around the game world.
In Grime 2, your first priority should be unlocking the Force Dash Talent. This allows you to recover Force – up to 32 per dash at level 3 – by timing your dashes correctly, specifically just before an enemy attacks. Later on, you’ll even be able to see a visual cue (a green pattern) that shows you the perfect timing. It’s incredibly helpful, so upgrade Force Dash to Level 3 as soon as you can.
When you reach Tier 2, prioritize improving your ability to avoid attacks, but only invest one point initially. This unlocks a much better talent called Dash Recovery. Dash Recovery reduces the cooldown between your dashes, and you should maximize it quickly for optimal performance.
Next is Foce Mold, which restores 20 Force each time a player uses a Mold that consumes Paint. This creates a refill effect, helping players maintain a steady resource gain while fighting bosses or groups of enemies. Just one level of Force Mold is enough.
Players should get the Force Parry talent, but only one point’s worth. This unlocks more advanced talents in Tier 2, which are the next ones you should focus on.
The ‘First Strike’ talent is a powerful upgrade unlocked after collecting 12 Molds. It boosts the damage of your first successful parry – including Grasp Parries – by 70-90%. Maxing it out at level 3 provides the highest possible damage increase.
The First Strike ability unlocks the Tier 3 Talent, Parry Infusion. Parry Infusion adds a mark to enemies you successfully parry, increasing the amount of health you regain after defeating them. However, the main reason to get this Talent is to unlock two powerful Tier 4 Talents: Rage Parry and Empowering Parry.
The skills Rage Parry and Empowering Parry enhance the parrying system. Rage Parry makes it easier to parry specific, powerful attacks. Empowering Parry, gained by successfully parrying, boosts weapon damage and can stack up to three times. Fully upgrading both skills requires Hunt Pigments – four for Empowering Parry and a significant amount for Rage Parry. While costly, these upgrades are worthwhile for players aiming to overcome the challenging late-game content in Grime 2.
