Avatar Legends Details Princess Azula’s Gameplay

The developers of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game recently revealed details about how Princess Azula will play in the game. They also announced the standard version will cost $29.99 when it releases on July 2nd for PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and both Nintendo Switch models.

First airing on Nickelodeon in February 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender has grown into the Avatar Legends franchise. Over the past 21 years, nine video games based on the series have been released, mostly as action-adventure games with basic fighting. However, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is different. It’s a brand-new 2D fighting game featuring 12 beloved characters, several ways to play, and special gameplay features.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Shares Princess Azula Gameplay Breakdown

As the July 2nd release of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game approaches, the developers at Gameplay Group International are gradually revealing gameplay details for each character. Following a February breakdown of earthbender Toph, they’ve now showcased Princess Azula. For players unfamiliar with the original animated series, Azula is Prince Zuko’s younger sister, the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai, and a princess of the Fire Nation. She’s a remarkably talented firebender, known for her ability to create blue flames, which are a key feature of her fighting style in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game.

According to Gameplay Group International’s recent PlayStation Blog post, Princess Azula in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has two different ways to play. Her first is called Focused Mode, where she fights with precise and deliberate attacks. When in this mode, Azula moves more cautiously and uses special abilities that create oil traps, which can be set on fire to surprise her opponents.

Azula also has a Firelord Mode where she fully taps into the unpredictable nature of firebending. When activated, her movements become faster and less predictable, and she switches from setting traps to using more powerful attacks, like a wall of fire that moves forward. Both of Azula’s fighting styles emphasize her incredible agility and ability to move quickly through the air.

Sokka Plays Very Differently

When Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game releases, it will include 12 playable characters. While most of these fighters use bending—manipulating elements like fire, water, earth, or air—some don’t. Sokka, for example, fights using his intelligence, determination, and weapons. According to the game developers, instead of bending, Sokka can quickly transition from regular attacks into special moves, letting him dodge or reposition himself instantly. This speed and agility are his biggest strengths, but he can’t link his normal attacks into stronger C attacks. Since Sokka doesn’t have any bending abilities, he has to depend on his iconic weapons—like his boomerang, club, and Meteorite Sword—to fight effectively.

Players will get to control Princess Azula and Sokka in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, which launches with a variety of options. These include Arcade, Story, Training, and Online modes, as well as challenges to learn combos and character-specific moves. The game will also feature a Gallery Mode with artwork that hasn’t been seen before.
