Tekken 8 Should Bite The Bullet It Has Long Dodged

As a seasoned Tekken enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Mokujin’s absence in recent iterations of the game has left a noticeable void. The quirky, fourth-wall breaking wooden warrior was a staple of my childhood gaming years, and his return would be a welcome blast from the past.

Despite occasional stumbles, Tekken 8 effectively continues the esteemed tradition of the 3D fighting game series in the current console era. With its first anniversary approaching and a host of achievements already under its belt – including the introduction of three downloadable characters, an expansion to its main storyline, and lively dialogue between players and creators – Tekken 8 is off to a promising start. Although it may be years before Tekken 8 can be fairly compared with the legendary Tekken 7, it’s currently making commendable progress.

Regarding the future direction of Tekken 8, it’s difficult to predict with certainty. One more character is expected in the first season pass, and after that, we can only speculate. Possible additions could include further developments in Tekken 8’s two story modes, but what’s definite are additional characters and stages. Numerous leaks hint at potential new characters joining the game, and given the time it takes to introduce each season’s fighters, we can’t know for sure what’s next. However, there’s speculation that an unconventional legacy character might make a comeback in Tekken 8.

Recent Tekken Has Been Light On Weirdo Fighters

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always appreciated the more grounded martial arts approach in Tekken compared to Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, with their array of bizarre characters. While you’ll frequently encounter cyborgs like Yoshimitsu and animals such as bears, kangaroos, and dinosaurs across various Tekken games, the series doesn’t shy away from the truly unusual.

Mokujin Is A Mold-Breaking Tekken Character

In the world of gaming, particularly in the “Tekken” series, there’s a character named Mokujin, which roughly means “wood-person” in English. According to the game lore, this wooden dummy comes to life when immense evil arises, although this is just a part of the “Tekken 3” narrative. The character often breaks the fourth wall with its unique arcade ending. Mokujin appears consistently in “Tekken 5”, “Tekken 6”, and both versions of “Tekken Tag Tournament”. The character has become so iconic that it’s referenced in games where it isn’t even playable, and variations like metal Tetsujin and gold Kinjin have been introduced in spin-offs. However, for nearly a decade now, Mokujin has been absent from the gaming scene.

Mokujin Could Bring Something New To Tekken 8

Since the debut of Tekken 7 in arcades back in March 2015, Mokujin has been assigned mainly minor cosmetic changes across two consecutive numbered games. Though he technically wasn’t canon, there was a reason for his appearance, it’s just that he isn’t highly demanded as a fighter due to the unique style he represents. Mokujin is an uncommon fighting game character type known as a “Mimic,” someone who imitates the moves of other characters. He has influenced similar characters in other Bandai Namco fighting games, like Soul Calibur’s Edge Master, and takes his mimicking to the extreme by switching fighting styles between rounds rather than matches.

Tekken 8 Could Reintroduce Mokujin Fairly Easily

Incorporating Mokujin as a playable character in Tekken 8 would be an exciting addition, but not necessarily essential. Following the trend of Street Fighter 5’s Eleven, Mokujin could appear as a bonus character available through a season pass in Tekken 8. His return is sparked by Kazuya harnessing Azazel’s power.
