  • The PS5 Pro offers enhanced performance for No Man’s Sky.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of console history under my belt, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the Xbox One X’s performance in handling the vast expanse of No Man’s Sky. It’s like finding a hidden galaxy in the middle of a generation gap!

A developer working on the deep space action-adventure survival game “No Man’s Sky” has recently expressed appreciation for the mid-generation console, the Xbox One X. Although “No Man’s Sky” was initially launched for PlayStation 4 and PC, it appears that at least one team member is quite taken by the unexpected longevity of the Xbox One X.

Approximately seven years ago, on November 7, 2017, the Xbox One X was unveiled. This model came almost four years following the initial Xbox One and three years before the current line of Xbox gaming systems. Initially priced at $499, the Xbox One X offered several enhancements over the standard Xbox One. The improvements included a powerful 6 teraflop GPU and 12 GB of memory, housed within a more compact case than most previous Xbox models.

The Xbox One X might not be as powerful as today’s consoles, but it can certainly keep pace with some popular older games that continue to get updates. Martin Griffiths, a developer from Hello Games who works on the engine programming for No Man’s Sky, has expressed appreciation for the seven-year-old console via Twitter. The development team behind No Man’s Sky has made an effort to ensure that many of the features available in the Xbox Series X|S version of the game are also compatible with the Xbox One X. According to Griffiths, they have recently enabled screen space reflections for water or other large bodies of interplanetary liquid on the Xbox One X, which gives these surfaces a reflective appearance.

No Man’s Sky is Practically the Same on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S

Griffiths’ comment timing is significant because Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, an enhanced version of the standard PlayStation 5, just recently. This new console was released on November 7, 2024, and offers numerous improvements such as a GPU that’s 45% faster and advanced ray tracing capabilities. The PS5 Pro enhances game performance across the board, but developers have particularly leveraged its powerful hardware to optimize more than 50 games for it by its launch date, with titles like “No Man’s Sky” among them.

“Only two other games, besides No Man’s Sky, have taken advantage of the PS5 Pro’s unique features so far, one of which is the ability to display in 8k resolution – the highest standard in gaming right now. The PS5 can support the game at 8k while running at 30 frames per second, but a 4k resolution with 60 fps performance is also available for those who prefer smoother gameplay. This feature, however, isn’t supported by the Xbox One X. However, as noted by Griffiths, this enhanced capability on a mid-generation console can extend the lifespan of long-lasting games like No Man’s Sky.
