As a seasoned Call of Duty veteran who’s been through the ups and downs of Gunship Killstreaks since the legendary AC-130 in Modern Warfare 2, let me tell you, Treyarch has truly outdone themselves with the Dreadnought in Black Ops 6. The cinematic experience, the satisfying weapons, and the epic final Daisy Cutter bomb have raised the bar so high that I’m afraid future Scorestreaks will be left playing catch-up.
Steak-killing has been a traditional aspect of the “Call of Duty” series since the debut of “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” in 2007. Even though it only had three Killstreaks, “Call of Duty 4” established a robust foundation for the future of the franchise, with its Radar, Airstrike, and Helicopter still being employed in some capacity in the latest installment, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6“.
As a gamer stepping back into the thrilling world of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, I’m excited to find myself once again navigating the Scorestreak system, first introduced in Black Ops 2. This game offers an impressive lineup of 18 power-ups, many of which are cherished veterans from the franchise, such as UAV, RC-XD, Care Package, Napalm Strike, and Chopper Gunner. However, it’s not just about the old favorites; Black Ops 6 has also introduced some fresh Scorestreaks, one of which is a revamped version of a fan-favorite and the best it’s ever been!
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Dreadnought Raises the Bar for Future Scorestreaks
Call of Duty Has Had Plenty of Gunship Killstreaks Over The Years
Without being officially named a “Gunship” initially, the AC-130 Killstreak from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 paved the way for one of the series’ most beloved and potent abilities. Sitting in the gunner position of an AC-130, players could swiftly switch among a 25mm Gatling Gun, a 40mm Cannon, and a 105mm Howitzer, each capable of obliterating the enemy team in a flash. With two flares at its disposal, the AC-130 could endure up to three RPG attacks before being compromised.
In “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” players were given the unique opportunity to personally control an airship known as the Gunship Killstreak, soaring over the battlefield. On the other hand, “Call of Duty: WW2” and the latest release “Vanguard” have reimagined this feature by enabling players to operate a B-17 bomber’s turret, unleashing destruction from above with a historical twist.
The rebooted trilogy by Infinity Ward for “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” includes a Gunship Killstreak, which operates quite like the AC-130 skill from “Modern Warfare 2,” but with enhanced graphics and audio. Despite its power, the frequent use of the Gunship in recent times has left some gamers yearning for fresh content. Fortunately, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” offers a novel alternative.
How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Dreadnought Stands Out From the Crowd
Following the achievement of an impressive 1800 score, the Dreadnought from Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 stands as the most expensive Scorestreak in the game. However, its high cost is justified by the engaging experience it offers. Instead of immediately placing you in the gunner seat, the Dreadnought Scorestreak in Black Ops 6 presents a brief cinematic sequence first. This sequence shows your character in the cockpit of the gunship, adjusting some switches, inspecting a massive bomb stored in the cargo hold, and finally assuming the gunner position.
When the player has finished their time in the Dreadnought’s gunner seat, there’s a short cinematic sequence that plays out. In this scene, the player character is shown exiting the front of the plane and dropping the previously mentioned bomb onto unsuspecting enemies below. Although these sequences are only a few seconds long, they significantly enhance the feeling of importance associated with the Dreadnought in Black Ops 6, making it seem more like a significant event rather than just a temporary power-up.
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the Dreadnought’s distinct destruction animation occurs when the aircraft is blown up. Rather than displaying the typical explosion, it shows a Daisy Cutter bomb detonating within its storage area instead.
But a Scorestreak can’t rely on flashy visuals alone. Thankfully, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s Dreadnought feels incredibly satisfying to use. Much like previous iterations of the gunship, the Dreadnought lets players cycle through three powerful weapons, those being Rocket Pods, a Dual Barrel Cannon, and a Gatling Gun. Each of these weapons sounds appropriately dramatic, and they’re as efficient as ever at wiping out enemy players who dare to walk out from enclosed cover. And to top it off, the Scorestreak ends with a Daisy Cutter bomb slowly making its way down to the battlefield, wiping out anyone still standing.
