An Xbox fan got a surprising find when they bought a used Xbox 360 – it turned out to be a development kit used by Rockstar Games while making GTA 4. Founded in 1998, Rockstar Games, originally from New York City, has become a hugely famous game studio, best known for series like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. While Rockstar now has studios around the globe working on its many games, some locations are especially popular with fans.

Rockstar North is a well-known part of Rockstar Games, especially among fans. This studio, based in Edinburgh, usually takes the lead on creating new Grand Theft Auto games, and has been solely responsible for most of the main games in the series. They also frequently help with other projects, like the first Red Dead Redemption (working with Rockstar San Diego) and various GTA spin-offs (with Rockstar Leeds). A Grand Theft Auto fan named Janmatant shared an amazing find on the GTAForums website. They purchased a used game console at a car boot sale in the UK for just 5 British pounds. Remarkably, the console still had the original Rockstar seal and contained an early, unfinished version of Grand Theft Auto 4. This beta version included content that didn’t make it into the final game, such as different radio stations with unique songs, a zombie mini-game that was cut, and even a model of the ferry seen in the very first GTA 4 trailer.

The amazing find also revealed the owner’s plans for the development kit. The fan, who posted on GTAForums, said they plan to sell the console and have already received offers of up to 800 GBP from eager fans. They shared pictures of the console, including the Xshell launcher, which was only used on Xbox 360 development kits. A beta version of Grand Theft Auto 4 found on the kit suggests it was created around September 2007 – about seven months before the game officially launched.

Fans were excited by a recent discovery within the files of GTA 4, revealing content that didn’t make it into the final game. This included several songs that were removed from the soundtrack, featuring artists like Run DMC, Daddy Yankee, and The Who. Another big find was a zombie mini-game, which appears to have been cut during development. Interestingly, this mini-game may have inspired the Undead Nightmare DLC for Red Dead Redemption, which featured a full zombie experience.

A significant piece of Rockstar Games’ history has recently come to light as the studio prepares for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, one of its biggest releases yet. Currently slated for November 19th, GTA 6 has faced several delays since it was first announced in 2023. The game will return players to the vibrant, tropical setting of Vice City – a location not seen since 2006’s Vice City Stories – and is one of the most eagerly awaited games in the industry.
