Borderlands 4 now features a large number of new bosses to fight, in addition to the returning enemies. These include challenging DLC bosses such as the Stone Demon and Minister Screw.
The Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC adds new bosses and more loot to Borderlands 4. Captain Willis is one of the toughest bosses in the DLC, so be prepared for a challenging fight!
Here’s a guide to Captain Willis in Borderlands 4, covering where to find him, what items he drops, and strategies for beating him.
Captain Willis Location

You’ll find Captain Willis at the very end of the Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC, deep within The Whispering Glacier. You must finish the DLC’s main storyline first, which culminates in a meeting with him in the Maelstrom.
Once you’ve defeated him, head back to Captain Willis on the Dahl ship located in the southeast corner of The Whispering Glacier. From there, you’ll be able to travel from The Whispering Glacier to the Maelstrom.
After entering the Maelstrom, head north until you reach the very end. You’ll see a large portal there – jump through it to begin the boss fight.
Once you’ve beaten the boss a second time, a portal will appear close to the Speakeasy entrance. This portal takes you back to the area right before the initial portal, letting you re-enter the Vault of the Damned.
You’ll find a Moxxi Replay machine for Captain Willis inside the vault, close to where you enter the boss arena.
Captain Willis Loot
Captain Willis drops some great loot! He has three unique items: a powerful assault rifle, a strong shotgun, and a head-mounted weapon – two of which are particularly rare and valuable.
| Item Name | Type | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Heimdahl | Heavy Ordnance | Rig: Bullets are replaced with Dahl soldier heads that attack nearby enemies. |
| Reminisce | Shotgun | Remnant: Does not reload. Instead, it refills the ammo when the bullets return. |
| Crow-Sourced | Assault Rifle | Cryo Override: Converts damage to cryo. Left of the Murder: Fires random objects. |
Captain Willis’ treasure includes two powerful weapons: Heimdahl and Reminisce. Heimdahl is a unique heavy weapon that shoots Dahl soldier heads as its ammunition.
Reminisce is a unique shotgun that doesn’t need to be reloaded in the traditional way. Instead of reloading, it fires bullets that bounce back to the shooter, automatically refilling the weapon.
The team’s standout weapon is the Crow-Sourced assault rifle. It has two special abilities: first, it can convert its damage into cryo damage, and second, it can shoot out random objects.
Tips for Defeating Captain Willis
Captain Willis isn’t a particularly challenging DLC boss, and many players find him much less frustrating than bosses from earlier DLC, such as Sturm & Drang. He has two health sections: one acts as armor, and the other is his actual health.

To beat the boss, it’s best to use a weapon that weakens armor, along with one that deals fire damage to its health. However, if you have a powerful special ability – like Harlowe’s Chroma Accelerator or C4SH’s dual pistols – you might be able to defeat the boss very quickly.
Captain Willis uses powerful area-of-effect attacks, so you’ll need to dodge frequently. Watch the ground for energy waves and move side-to-side to avoid the lines of blood shards.
After you break the boss’s armor, he’ll unlock new attacks. When Willis leans back and starts shouting, quickly move close and use your grappling hook to grab his head.
This move will interrupt his attack and briefly stun him, giving you a chance to attack before he recovers. Willis will then gather energy and release it across the arena, so quickly move to the edge to avoid getting hurt.
