If you loved the classic GoldenEye 007 or enjoy James Bond games, you’ll probably enjoy The Operative: No One Lives Forever. It’s a first-person shooter focused on stealth and action, where you play as a spy using cool gadgets and weapons. The game features a fun story and memorable characters, especially the fantastic lead character, Cate Archer.
2026 Spiritual Successor: 007 First Light
Although you don’t play as the main character, 007 First Light is the closest game you’ll find to a follow-up to No One Lives Forever. The original NOLF was a funny tribute to James Bond, and this new third-person shooter completes the connection by putting players back in the world of the iconic spy.
When it comes to first-person shooters, Mouse: P.I. For Hire stands out with its unique style and throwback visuals.

This success established the Halo series as a truly iconic gaming franchise.
Players take on the role of Master Chief, a powerful supersoldier, and fight through waves of enemies – primarily the alien Covenant and The Flood – to achieve their goals. The game offers a wide variety of weapons and vehicles, including a particularly iconic starting weapon, making combat incredibly diverse. It’s also renowned for its excellent local co-op experience, thanks to its well-implemented split-screen mode.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Marathon
Okay, so everyone’s saying the next Halo game in 2026 will feel the most like the original Combat Evolved, but calling it a true follow-up to that classic feels a little too much. Instead, I think Bungie’s new multiplayer shooter is a better fit for that role. It had a rocky start, sure, but the way it plays really reminds me of what Bungie did so well back in the day.
For single-player, Doom: The Dark Ages has that frantic, intense sandbox action synonymous with Halo.

Even though it was released five years ago, Hell Let Loose continues to receive updates and has a dedicated player base. To experience the intense, realistic, and large-scale battles of WWII – like storming Omaha Beach or fighting in destroyed French towns – you’ll need to play online. Hell Let Loose excels at delivering immersive, boots-on-the-ground warfare that feels historically accurate and authentic.
For single-player content, 2025’s Sniper Elite: Resistance is an option.

Similar to Medal of Honor, the original Call of Duty stood out with its quick action, dramatic scenes, and fast-paced gameplay. It also offered a variety of weapons, and was one of the first shooters to let players zoom in using iron sights – a feature that became widely popular thanks to Call of Duty.
The original Call of Duty game feels distinct from its sequels, lacking features like automatically replenishing health and focusing on a realistic, gritty atmosphere. Its campaign unfolds across multiple World War II fronts – following American, Soviet, and British forces. The British perspective, in particular, would become a hallmark of the Call of Duty series, notably in the Modern Warfare titles.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Enlisted
While Hell Let Loose feels like a spiritual successor to the original Call of Duty, we wanted to offer something different. Released in 2005, F.E.A.R. was a groundbreaking game, and remains impressive even today. It was particularly known for its incredibly smart enemy AI – opponents would flank players, use cover fire, and react realistically. Remarkably, F.E.A.R.‘s AI still surpasses many modern first-person shooters, and the game offers much more than just intelligent enemies.
F.E.A.R. successfully combines the fast-paced action of first-person shooters with genuine horror, avoiding the common pitfall of being simply a shooter with monsters or a horror game with guns. It masterfully blends intense gunfights with psychological horror, a spooky story, and unsettling atmosphere. Though some elements aren’t groundbreaking today, the game’s core mechanics, particularly its bullet-time effect, still hold up well.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Trepang2
Even though it came out a few years ago, Trepang2 is easily the best choice here. It’s essentially a modern take on the classic game F.E.A.R., and it’s one of the most exciting shooters of the last ten years. It features fast-paced, impactful gunfights, over-the-top action, and some truly frightening scenes, especially if you explore the optional side missions.

Because you can be taken down quickly, every action counts. The game offers a variety of weapons and vehicles, and you can also direct your allied teammates to help you achieve your goals.
With Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter on the Xbox 360, players experienced one of the first truly high-definition console games, showcasing what felt like a leap forward in graphics and quality. Though set in a futuristic 2013 and featuring city-based battles, the game remained a genuine military shooter, emphasizing realistic weapons and strategic gameplay.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Ready or Not
Though it exchanges military combat for intense, realistic SWAT scenarios within the United States, Ready or Not perfectly captures the slow, deliberate, and challenging tactical gameplay that players expect. With a consistently active player base of over 8,000 on Steam, this multiplayer shooter doesn’t show any signs of losing popularity anytime soon.
Ground Branch feels more similar to the gameplay of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, though it’s currently unclear what the future holds for that older game.

2007 — BioShock
An Undeniable FPS Video Game Masterpiece
2007 was a huge year for first-person shooter games, with many popular titles being released. Despite the crowded market, BioShock stood out as a clear winner. While there were plenty of good shooters that year, there was only one BioShock.
BioShock lets you play stealthily, or use its many weapons and special abilities. The game world is full of details you can interact with, making it feel incredibly immersive. You’ll encounter different enemies as you explore, including the iconic Big Daddy. But BioShock is best known for its compelling story, and is considered one of the greatest story-driven first-person shooters ever made.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Judas and Clockwork Revolution
I’m adding these two games, which are still being developed, because neither is officially slated to come out in 2026. However, we expect at least one of them to be released this year. Judas is being created by Ken Levine, the mind behind BioShock, at his new studio, and it clearly shows his style with its vintage-future look, decaying environments, and thought-provoking characters.
I’m really excited about Clockwork Revolution! It feels a lot like a follow-up to BioShock Infinite, which I loved. It’s set in this amazing steampunk city called Avalon, and honestly, it reminds me so much of Columbia from Infinite – the similarities are striking. Instead of getting powers like in BioShock, you use a cool device that lets you travel back in time. The neat part is, whatever you change in the past actually affects the present and the way this broken, divided society works.
Atomic Heart 2 is in development, and that also has BioShock influences.

While still playable today, the online community for the original game is much smaller than that of its sequel, making it feel more like a precursor to something greater.
If we go back to 2008, before knowing how popular the genre would become, Left 4 Dead felt incredibly innovative. Valve’s co-op shooter was packed with fast-paced action and a groundbreaking AI, setting the standard for many “horde shooters” that followed. Even today, the shooting mechanics are still enjoyable, making it a fun game to play even in 2026.

Following the successful formula of Left 4 Dead, Toxic Commando is a new cooperative shooter where players team up to destroy large groups of zombie-like enemies.

Call of Duty was known for its fast-paced, action-packed gameplay, but Modern Warfare took things to a whole new level. Modern Warfare 2, with its bigger explosions, wider variety of weapons, and overall excitement, was the game that really made the Call of Duty series a massive success.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 built on the success of the original Modern Warfare, offering even more weapons, a deeper multiplayer experience, and a gripping single-player campaign. It also introduced the Spec Ops mode. Many fans consider it the best game in the entire Call of Duty series, and it’s easy to understand why – it took everything people loved about the first Modern Warfare and made it even better. It’s no wonder that this game, along with the first Modern Warfare and the first two Black Ops titles, are consistently ranked among the very best in the franchise.
2026 Spiritual Successor: Black Ops 7 or Helldivers 2
The newest Call of Duty game, Black Ops 7, is the most likely choice. But Helldivers 2 is also worth mentioning, as its gameplay feels a lot like the Spec Ops mode in Modern Warfare 2.
