As someone who has been following the Mortal Kombat franchise for as long as I can remember, it’s safe to say that I’m thrilled about the potential new directions this iconic series might take. The introduction of Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 has certainly stirred up some interesting discussions among fans, and I must admit, I find myself intrigued by the possibilities they present for future installments.
As a dedicated Mortal Kombat gamer, I’ve been hooked for over three decades now. From the stealthy Reptile to the bizarre D’Vorah, the franchise has consistently introduced an array of playable characters that not only offer unique gameplay experiences but also contribute to the game’s evolving storylines. While some characters might fade away due to fan preferences, most have had their moments in the Mortal Kombat universe.
It’s possible that this game has introduced potential key characters for the next installment of Mortal Kombat, dubbed as Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 2. The roster of Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 includes the following:
- Sub-Zero
- Shujinko
- Scorpion
- Motaro
- Kung Lao
- Cyrax
- Frost
- Goro
- Jax
- Kano
- Darrius
- Sareena
- Sektor
- Sonya
- Stryker
- Tremor
- Khameleon
- Janet Cage
- Mavado
- Ferra
Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo Fighters Explained
In this game, secondary characters known as Kameo Fighters serve as assistants to the player’s chosen fighter. They are not directly playable, but can be called upon during combat to aid in fighting or defense against opponents. These Kameo Fighters can also extend combos and execute Breakers and Fatal Blows against enemies. While it might take more effort than using main characters, Kameo Fighters offer a unique touch with special Brutalities and Fatalities inspired by their classic finishing moves from older Mortal Kombat games. However, unlike the main roster, Kameo Fighters can only be customized cosmetically with different outfit colors.
In the current version of Mortal Kombat 1, there are 20 Kameo Fighters in play, with more anticipated to join, including those from Kombat Pack 2 and additional DLC. Many Kameo Fighters are reminiscent of their original versions of classic characters instead of their counterparts from the new timeline, like the iconic Scorpion, Kung Lao, and Sektor. However, most Kameo Fighters are fresh renditions of previously playable characters in Titan Liu Kang’s timeline, with many featured in Mortal Kombat 1’s main storyline and Khaos Reigns expansion, such as Darrius, Goro, and Khameleon. Only one Kameo Fighter is known to hail from an unplayed timeline, and that character is the gender-swapped Janet Cage.
Kameo Fighter’s Protagonist Potential in Mortal Kombat 2
The incorporation of Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat received a blend of positive and negative feedback from some fans, with many advocating for the feature to be optional or transforming Kameo Fighters into playable characters entirely. Despite this polarized response, NetherRealm Studios plans to continue using Kameo Fighters throughout the remainder of Mortal Kombat 1’s lifespan, although it remains uncertain if the mechanic will resurface in future titles. However, NetherRealm could potentially build new main characters for Mortal Kombat 2 around the concept of Kameo Fighters, alongside familiar faces like Liu Kang, Scorpion, and Noob Saibot from Mortal Kombat 1.
In the potential sequel of Mortal Kombat 2, Sonya Blade and Jackson Briggs, both Special Forces operatives, might assume significant roles. Although the Special Forces had a minimal presence in Mortal Kombat 1’s narrative, they could take on pivotal positions in opposing General Shao’s rebellion in Outworld. In a pre-fight conversation, Liu Kang keeps Johnny Cage’s fate hidden from Sonya Blade, suggesting their relationship could deepen in future installments. Frost could be Noob Saibot and Sektor’s adversary against the Shirai Ryu, while Tremor, an Earth-empowered ninja with a brown hue, may side with Scorpion instead of assisting the Black Dragon mercenaries as in earlier timelines.
Kameo Fighters Potential Pivotal Roles
In the storyline of Mortal Kombat 1, there are numerous indications pointing towards the Dragon King Onaga potentially serving as the main antagonist for Mortal Kombat 2. If this comes to pass, Shujinko might be required to take on a more significant role in Liu Kang’s timeline, once again confronting the Dragon King. In the original Mortal Kombat narrative, Onaga was reborn within Reptile, but Mortal Kombat 2 could alter this by having Onaga possess Khameleon instead, as both are from Zaterra. Since Onaga is currently stationed at Outworld’s Mount Tsaagan, Ferra might play a crucial part in either helping or opposing the Dragon King.
