Farming Simulator 25: How To Feed Cows Effectively

As an experienced gamer who’s spent countless hours tending to virtual fields and livestock in the Farming Simulator series, I can attest that the intricacies of maintaining a thriving cow barn are no laughing matter – unless you’re dealing with cows that are overly fond of their TMR!

In Farming Simulator 25, it’s not only about tending crops. Players can also engage in animal husbandry and earn from the produce of these animals, providing an additional means to boost income and broaden their farming ventures.

Cows are generally preferred among various animals due to their high milk demand and profitable prices, coupled with an efficient reproduction rate. However, caring for cows can be challenging, particularly for newcomers to the Farming Simulator series. The intricacies of managing a cow barn, such as acquiring the necessary machinery and tools, might appear complex. Yet, compared to other aspects, feeding cows can seem especially daunting.

In constructing your cow barn, the game presents an option to establish a lush grassy area, or “meadow”, located at the back of the barn’s pasture. By selecting ‘yes’, you provide your cows with their own meadows to graze on. Consequently, the cows will be fed automatically without further action required from you.

However, meadows are base-tier food for cows with an effectiveness of only 40%. The best food for cows is Total Mixed Ration (TMR), which comes with an effectiveness of 100%. However, TMR cannot be bought outright, and players must craft it on their own.

To make Total Mixed Ration (TMR), you’ll need two main components: Hay and Silage. Combining these elements produces TMR, but it’s crucial to remember that they should not be mixed by hand. Instead, before mixing, you’ll first need to buy a Forage Mixer, which comes in various types. Additionally, a Bale Spike is essential for transporting both Hay and Silage bales.

Bale Spike can be found under
Front Loader Tools
.

Ultimately, the key is acquiring the essentials – Hay and Silage. Although they can be made through farming, delving into that process would necessitate additional machinery and time investments, so let’s save that for another discussion.

To speed up your advancement, consider buying both Hay and Silage from the Bales section within the Animals part of the store. It’s also possible to enhance the effectiveness by including Straw and Mineral Feed in the mix, although these are optional extras.

Currently, fasten the Bale Spike onto your Loader, gather a single bale of Hay and Silage, and subsequently deposit them into the mixer. Position yourself beside the mixer, and you’ll observe that the levels for Hay and Silage are growing. To produce Total Mixed Rations (TMR), both should be in the green zone.

You can also add
Straw and Miner Feed
based on the required amount, but keep in mind that they will mess up the ratio of Hay and Silage, and you may need to buy and add more of them to the mix.

If the proportions of your ingredients are right, you’ll notice a Total Feed Mixer icon when transporting the mixer towards the barn. Every cow barn has a feeding icon, either inside or outside. Position the mixer near the icon, then change to the dumping exit that faces the cows and empty the feed.

If you navigate to the barn management dashboard, you’ll notice that there is Total Mixed Ration (TMR) available. While silage and hay alone can feed cows, it’s essential to pulverize them using a mixer for optimal cow nutrition.
