As someone who has spent countless hours traversing the lush landscapes of Galar, I can wholeheartedly attest to the groundbreaking impact that Pokemon Sword and Shield had on the franchise. The Wild Area was an open-world marvel that breathed fresh air into a series that had previously been treading familiar paths.
Despite facing various highs and lows in its run on the Nintendo Switch, it’s challenging to overlook the significant influence that Pokemon Sword and Shield from Generation 8 exerted on the franchise. The beginning of Generation 8 was marked by a contentious debate known as “Dexit,” which dominated discussions around the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield in 2019. However, with five years having passed since then, the dust has settled around these games, and given the current direction of the series towards an open-world format, it’s evident that Generation 8 paved the way for this approach to thrive.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about one captivating feature that left an indelible impression on me during my journey through Pokémon Sword and Shield – the revolutionary Wild Area. This unique, expansive region was a fresh addition to the franchise upon its release, offering players an unprecedented sense of freedom as they explored an open section of the game’s world.
Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Wild Area Gave Players a Taste of Open World Gameplay
Despite its Flaws, the Wild Area was a Breath of Fresh Air in Pokemon Sword and Shield
As a dedicated Pokemon fan, I’ve always appreciated how mainline games up to Generation 8 followed a consistent linear design, with players traversing from town to town along pre-determined paths that were strategically dotted with trainers for encounters and battles. However, in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the gameplay experience is refreshed by introducing the Wild Area, which links the Galar Region cities of Motostoke and Hammerlocke. Instead of restricting players to a narrow route-based exploration, the Wild Area offers an expansive playground for us to roam freely, discover various biomes, and come across wild critters, whether they’re hidden within tall grass or out in the open.
In the Wild Area, players found a refreshing change from sticking to the main storyline as it offered them an opportunity to craft their own journeys, delving into every hidden corner this zone presented. Accessible even before the first gym, many players found themselves getting engrossed in the Wild Area and stumbling upon Pokemon much stronger than their current team. This is a popular tactic used in open-world RPGs to guide players, but in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the Wild Area attracted players back by featuring high-level creatures, making it an exciting destination post-character leveling.
The downloadable content (DLC) for Pokemon Sword and Shield, namely the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, have enlarged the Wild Area by adding exclusive zones. In these additional areas, you can discover previously unseen Pokémon.
Pokemon’s Current Open-World Format Can Trace its Roots Back to Sword and Shield
In the games released after Sword and Shield, Game Freak expanded on the series’ concept of an open-world map. Unlike a true open world, the design in Pokemon Legends: Arceus offered multiple areas that players could explore freely with minimal linear guidance. Additionally, this game introduced Alpha Pokemon, which resemble the high-level wild Pokemon found in the Wild Areas and serve as challenges for player progression.
In the game Pokemon Scarlet and Violet from Generation 9, we finally get a true open-world experience for the first time in the Pokemon series. While the Wild Area laid the groundwork, the design of Paldea’s map still shows its influence. Although players can roam freely after the prologue, there are boundaries set by critter and trainer levels to prevent them from venturing into unsuitable areas.
