As someone who has spent countless hours exploring the depths of digital underworlds, I can confidently say that the games listed here are truly remarkable. Each one offers a unique perspective on the afterlife, from the comedic bureaucracy of Grim Fandango to the harrowing journey through Senua’s mind in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
When we talk gaming, sometimes it really is better underground.
Over the past few decades, I’ve found that the realm often referred to as “hell” has been a rich source of inspiration, nurturing some truly captivating concepts. The games set in these locations evoke a diverse spectrum of feelings within me.
The following games imply that regardless if you’re seeking a lost loved one or embarking on a killing spree of demons, it seems familiar and comfortable when you’re there, given the appropriate circumstances.
9 Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell
Underworld, Underground
As a gamer, when I ponder over Saints Row, my thoughts typically drift towards the intense battles between rival gangs and the thrilling allure of the criminal underbelly – it’s quite an exhilarating world to immerse myself in.
In “Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell,” they push boundaries by immediately transporting you to the fiery depths of hell. Your objective? Escape!
The game “Gat Out of Hell” received a fair share of criticism upon its release since it didn’t resemble “Saints Row 4”, and that’s actually a positive aspect.
The game is a camp masterpiece, with goofy monsters, a hunky devil, angel wings, and an armchair with Gatling guns.
If you’re a fan of games with a light-hearted, humorous tone similar to “Devil May Cry”, but find yourself so engrossed in the world of Saints Row that letting it go is difficult for you, then this game could be just right for you!
8 DOOM Eternal
The Original Hellraiser Reborn
At one point, there weren’t any authentic video games depicting the underworld. But then came along DOOM, and since then, gaming has taken a completely new direction.
DOOM pioneered the first-person shooter (FPS) genre that we recognize today, and later, it was updated with a contemporary game engine to bring the franchise up to date.
In DOOM Eternal, you must brutally defeat the hordes from the underworld and drive them back to their rightful place.
While Eternal follows directly from the 2016 Doom reboot, it discards the chilling atmosphere of its forerunner and instead immerses you in a stunning display of bullet-filled chaos. It’s as brutal, gory, and quintessentially Doom as ever.
7 Dante’s Inferno
The Divine Hack-‘n’-Slash
It should come as no surprise that the creators of Dead Space have conjured a timeless masterpiece.
In my perspective, the game is reminiscent of, yet deviates significantly from, the first segment of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem, The Divine Comedy titled Inferno. However, Visceral injects a unique twist by placing a Templar at its centerstage.
Dante’s Inferno distinguishes itself by its meticulousness, setting it apart as a particularly distinctive portrayal of video game hell.
Incorporating both Computer Graphics (CG) and animated cutscenes enhances the somber ambiance and underscores the significance of meticulous world creation. At times, it distracts from the unusual emphasis on quick-time events throughout the gameplay.
6 Metal: Hellsinger
Hellish Rhythmic Blasting
Bad rhythm FPS games feel like hell, but a good one makes you wish you were down there.
The game titled “Hellsinger” offers challenging rhythms, boasts exceptional level layouts, features an array of formidable foes, and showcases an exceptional metal soundtrack that might even bring tears to your eyes.
In this setting, you’ll journey together with esteemed musicians from bands such as Trivium, Lamb of God, System of a Down, and others, battling your way through desolate urban landscapes and deserted temples.
The beat system is nearly perfect, with occasional awkward timings, which can be attributed to input delays or you having poor rhythm. The bloody action and beautiful soundtrack make it easy to forgive these imperfections.
5 Afterparty
The Devil’s Drinking Buddies
The idea that misery prefers companionship is vividly depicted in the story, “Afterparty.” In this tale, friends Milo and Lola encounter an unexpected twist: they both perish and end up in hell. However, they stumble upon a glimmer of hope that could save them from eternal torment.
The post-event gathering presents an enticing test: if you manage to drink more than the devil, you’ll receive a pass to return to the upper world.
In a distinctive fashion, the unconventional art design, engaging conversation choices, and charming drink concoctions like the Bloody Stool, set Afterparty apart as a game brimming with personality and heart.
This game isn’t quite as engaging or hard-to-put-down as Oxenfree, yet it retains a certain charm that makes Night School Studio’s games so lovable.
As a dedicated gamer, I took a spin on Afterparty initially, but the game’s launch left much to be desired with its share of bugs and performance hiccups. However, the dev team has put in some serious elbow grease to smooth out the experience. So, if it didn’t quite hook you the first time around, I’d say it’s worth another shot – let’s give it a spin once more!
4 Ultrakill
Boomer Shooter Revival
If all the best shooters of the 1990s had a baby, it would be Ultrakill.
This game stands out as one of the top-scored Steam games, boasting a staggering 97% rating. Regrettably, it’s just short of perfection, falling slightly below a perfect 100%.
Ultrakill represents raw, uncensored violence, yet it’s presented in an artistic manner instead of being crude or distasteful.
The motion flows smoothly, the weapons have a fantastic feel to them, and it’s user-friendly enough for even those who are the least skilled in almost any first-person shooter available.
3 Grim Fandango
A Deadly 9-to-5 Job
In most games that take place in hell, you’d typically find portrayals of the underworld as filled with fire, brimstone, and tortured souls. However, the 1990s classic Grim Fandango offers a unique twist by incorporating Mexican folklore elements, producing an enjoyable spin on the theme.
Experience a four-year journey in the life of deceased travel agent Manny Calavera, where you’ll appreciate the witty, dark humor found within the red tape of the underworld.
In 2015, the classic game Grim Fandango underwent an upgrade, maintaining its unique atmosphere while enhancing audio quality, visuals, and control mechanisms to meet contemporary gaming standards.
The puzzles are somewhat challenging, so be prepared to consult a guide. However, the charm of it all fades away when you’re in a world of point-and-click perfection with these exceptional characters.
2 Hades
Beat the King of the Underworld
The Greek underworld makes the perfect setting for recent years’ best dungeon crawler roguelike.
In a captivating turn of events, you wield the mighty power of Olympus to outshine no one more than Hades, the deity of the underworld.
The voice acting serves as the bond that unites all the outstanding features of the game, drawing you deep into the underworld with a sense of intention.
In a fan’s perspective, I must admit that some parts towards the end of the game can become a bit monotonous. However, the captivating combat system and stunningly beautiful levels make me forget about the grind and keep me engaged till the very end.
The unique blend of an artistic design that’s rich in creativity and a diverse collection of tools and adversaries puts Hades among the top-tier roguelikes ever created, and its successor, Hades 2, maintains this quality.
1 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
A Psychological Norse Journey
In the realm of Hellblade, I find myself immersed in a world inspired by Norse mythology. Yet, the true torment lies within Senua’s troubled mind, as she grapples with her inner demons and battles through the labyrinth of her own psyche.
Senua is compelled to confront an ocean of demise as her mind disintegrates, only to resurface repeatedly. The stunningly terrifying visuals and sound effects in this production have yet to be matched.
In the game ‘Hellblade’, the combat isn’t particularly remarkable. Interestingly, this is one of those rare instances where not using headphones can significantly diminish the overall enjoyment. However, the rewards make up for the effort.
This movie takes you on an emotionally impactful voyage, which may leave you deeply affected, as it offers a raw and courageous portrayal of mental health challenges seldom tackled by many video games.
