ROG Xbox Ally Just Got a Brand-New Update

The ROG Xbox Ally recently received a software update through the Xbox app, bringing several useful improvements to the handheld gaming device. Because the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally offers a near-native Xbox gaming experience, Microsoft provides strong support, and it’s helping to shape the future of Windows for gaming.

The ROG Xbox Ally handheld has received many updates since its launch, frequently adding new features. Although the Xbox Ally X is significantly more powerful than the original Ally, ASUS hasn’t neglected the earlier model. Instead, they’ve consistently improved the entire Ally platform, from pre-set game settings to how quickly games load. This level of ongoing support is similar to what Valve provides for the Steam Deck, which is a good sign for how long the Ally will remain a viable handheld.

ROG Xbox Ally Gets Full Screen Experience Improvements and More

The recent ROG Xbox Ally update improves the Xbox overlay with several useful additions. Players can now adjust display settings like resolution and projection modes, as well as customize the output for docked displays, all through the Xbox Game Bar. A small but appreciated change lets users choose where notifications appear on screen. While not as extensive as the Steam Deck’s planned March 2026 update, Microsoft hasn’t yet released the full patch notes. The update was first noticed by the team at ROG Ally Life.

The recent updates to the Xbox overlay are actually preparing for a new feature called Automatic Super Resolution, expected to launch around April 2026. This will be Microsoft’s own technology to boost game performance on most Windows PCs, and it will be particularly helpful for less powerful devices like the ROG Ally. It could also give Microsoft’s handheld a significant advantage over Valve’s Steam Deck, which currently uses an older upscaling technology unless users manually make changes. While promising, Auto Super Resolution is still largely unproven, so it’s too early to rely on it to dramatically improve game performance on the Xbox Ally.

Even if the March 2026 update for the ROG Xbox Ally isn’t a huge leap forward, it still supports Microsoft’s overall vision for Xbox and its future. Importantly, all the improvements included in this update are also available on other devices using the Xbox app, like Windows PCs. Whether the ROG Xbox Ally was a top invention of 2025 is debatable, but it’s clearly enhancing the Xbox experience on PC simply through app updates.

The ROG Ally isn’t flawless, but it’s a great handheld device for playing indie games and less demanding titles while you’re on the move. Its main weakness isn’t the hardware itself, but the fact that it runs Windows instead of an operating system designed specifically for gaming – something the Steam Deck does much better. However, Xbox is working on improvements, including optimizations to the operating system and a feature called Auto Super Resolution, which could change things soon.
