Marathon Reveals Patch Notes for March 31 Update

Bungie has released a new update for its game, Marathon, addressing several bugs and improving the Outpost map. The update also disables some advanced movement techniques players had discovered. Updates are now common for Marathon players, as Bungie is committed to keeping the game enjoyable and evolving. As an ongoing live service game, Bungie plans to continue supporting Marathon for the foreseeable future.

Since its release, Bungie has been quick to respond to player feedback, rapidly releasing updates and even trying out new ideas for Marathon. This is a big shift for players who have followed Bungie, particularly with past Destiny games where addressing concerns could take time. Recent changes include a test version of a Duos game mode and adjustments to the endgame schedule in Marathon to ensure players can access both Ranked and Cryo Archive activities without conflicts. The latest update continues to improve the game, making certain areas more enjoyable and ensuring a balanced experience for everyone.

Bungie recently released patch notes for Marathon addressing a new movement technique players discovered. Players were able to maintain speed by canceling slide animations with equipment or the Thief shell’s grapple, a tactic Bungie calls “unbounded movement.” The developers are changing this because they want aggressive play and quick repositioning to require some sort of trade-off – like overheating, risk, or ability cooldowns. Since this movement technique had none of those restrictions, Bungie believes it wasn’t sustainable for the game’s future.

This update includes some important changes to the Pinwheel area on the Outpost map in Marathon. The Tox Warden encounter, usually found near the Dormitories, has been tweaked to remove some hiding places, and the poisonous plants now react more quickly to players. Also, the final extraction point was previously spawning in the same spot each time, which has been corrected to create more unpredictable and exciting end-game scenarios.

The Outpost Pinwheel, a high-value loot area, has received several updates. Along with better rewards, the enemies and challenges inside have been adjusted to match. The central Hub room now features enhanced security, including bulletproof glass and new access credentials, and the Destroyed Wing entrance is now accessible again. Players have also discovered that some loot storage locations have been moved around, keeping runs through the Pinwheel area feeling new and interesting.

As a big fan of Marathon, I always appreciate when the developers address tricky spots in the game. It can be really frustrating to lose all your hard-earned gear because of a glitch, especially in a game where death carries such a penalty! I was thrilled to hear they fixed a problem in the Cryo Archive’s Vault 6 where players could accidentally fall to their death just for exploring. That map is so cool, it’d be a shame to lose a run there! They also fixed an issue on Dire Marsh where the Anomalous waypoint would sometimes appear off the map, even when it shouldn’t have been active. It’s great to see them keeping the game polished and making sure we can enjoy exploring everything Marathon has to offer.

Marathon Update 1.0.5.2 Patch Notes

Combat

Runner Shells

  • Fixed an issue allowing slide cancel animations to keep momentum when either pulling out equipment or Thief’s Grapple Device ability.

We believe that in Marathon, quick movements and aggressive plays should always come with a trade-off. This could be using up an ability, building up heat, or taking on more risk, but there needs to be a clear cost that players can understand. While fast, unrestricted movement can look impressive, it doesn’t fit the gameplay speed we’re aiming for. Moving forward, we’ll be carefully evaluating any techniques that allow for overly quick movement with this principle in mind.

Contracts

  • Fixed an issue where players could end up locked in a room during the Introducing: NuCaloric
  • Fixed an issue where disabled contracts could not be rerolled for free.
  • Fixed an issue making the objective points visible for all Runners on the map when one Runner is on RUN/HIDE [Part 1/6].

Zones

Dire Marsh

  • Fixed an issue where the Anomalous waypoint activity was appearing below the map even when the event was inactive.

Outpost

  • Adjusted the combat area for the Tox Warden:
    • Tuned the layout to reduce the number of hiding spots.
    • Tox plants now react correctly to player presence.
  • Fixed an issue where the final exfil would spawn in the same spot every time.

Pinwheel

  • Destroyed Wing entrance has been re-opened.
  • Improved overall loot rewards.
    • This includes the quality of loose loot and small containers.
  • Updated encounters to match reward quality.
  • Changed the security credentials needed to access the locked room in the Hub.
  • Added bulletproof glass to the Hub room.

Cryo Archive

  • Fixed geometry in Vault 6 that allowed Runners to fall to their death.

Armory

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when opening the Armory.
  • Fixed a bug that was causing low framerate on Armory tabs with many items.
    • Developer Note: Traxus operates beyond scale.

Codex

  • Fixed an issue in the Ranked Challenges section causing Diamond to show before Platinum.
  • Fixed an issue with the Requiem for a Cyborg challenge so that it progresses for all players in a crew after a successful Compiler kill.

UI & UX

Keybinds

  • The ESC key will now exit the keybinding menu instead of exiting settings.
  • Added an option to clear keybinds in the settings menu.
    • NOTE: Non-English languages will show this setting as blank. This will be fixed in a future patch.
