Mortal Shell 2 Reveals Open World and 3 Playable Shells

A new gameplay reveal for Mortal Shell 2 shows off the game’s open world and three different playable characters. Although Playstack and Cold Symmetry haven’t announced a specific release date yet, they’ve given fans a preview of what to expect in this dark fantasy action-RPG, coming later this year.

Cold Symmetry, the team behind the action-RPG Mortal Shell, is developing a sequel, Mortal Shell 2. First revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, the project builds on the success of the original game, which has sold over 2 million copies. Now with a team of 30, Cold Symmetry is aiming to improve and expand on their previous work and is preparing to share more details about Mortal Shell 2 after a well-received debut trailer last year.

Mortal Shell 2 Showcases Open-World Gameplay, Including Boss Fights

A new 12-minute gameplay video offers a closer look at Mortal Shell 2, showcasing its combat and open-world design. The video details three playable characters, called Shells: Tiel, The Acolyte; Eredrim, The Venerable; and Proxima, The Broodseeker. Each Shell looks unique and offers different skills and fighting styles that players can switch between. The game features challenging enemies and bosses throughout its open world, but players will have a variety of weapons – both close-range and long-range – to help them succeed. Battles will be fast-paced and action-packed, as the game doesn’t limit players with a stamina bar.

Cold Symmetry has shared details about the world of Mortal Shell 2, the action-RPG sequel. The game will feature a much larger and more varied world than the first Mortal Shell, with diverse landscapes and multiple routes for players to explore. However, the developers are focused on making the experience concise and respectful of players’ time. The recent gameplay reveal showed off environments like ruined fortresses, foggy forests, and frozen wastelands. Players can also expect over 60 uniquely designed dungeons, and a fast travel system will help them navigate the expansive world.

The recent gameplay reveal for Mortal Shell 2 showed off several of the game’s bosses, including a complete fight against Solnir Stillblade. This demonstration also highlighted a key ability of the Shell known as Eredrim, The Venerable. Playstack Announces Mortal Shell 2: Revered Edition for PS5

Although Mortal Shell 2 doesn’t have a firm release date yet, it’s expected to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam) sometime in 2026. Playstack has also announced a special Mortal Shell 2: Revered Edition – a collector’s box for PS5 that includes an artbook, a unique steel case, and limited-edition prints. Both the Revered Edition and a standard physical copy of the game for PS5 are available for pre-order now, and those who pre-order will receive the Obsidian Harbinger and Skeletal Harbinger character skins as a bonus.

With the release of Mortal Shell 2 getting closer, more details are sure to emerge. We already know the game will include both new and familiar Shells from the original Mortal Shell. However, the developers want to assure players that Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel – you won’t need to have played the first game to enjoy it.
