As a long-time Twitch viewer and occasional streamer myself, I’ve seen the platform evolve over the years and it’s been a significant part of my entertainment routine. However, the recent ‘adpocalypse’ has left me quite concerned, especially for those streamers who rely on ad revenue as their primary income source.
If you’ve come across the term ‘adpocalypse’ in the world of streaming but aren’t sure what it refers to, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. It has been disclosed that certain Twitch broadcasters have been severely affected by a dramatic decrease in ad income, and no one seems to know why. On this particular streaming platform, some users have even reported an 95% reduction in their ad revenue.
Unexpectedly, an “ad crisis” struck Twitch, affecting several top streamers who previously made thousands per month from ad income. Now, they’re only receiving a couple of hundred dollars, despite no changes on their part.
Taken for Granted
As a dedicated Twitch fan, it’s undeniable that the platform serves as a substantial income source for many streamers, including myself. Lately, I’ve noticed a trend on social media where users express their concerns about decreasing ad revenue. For instance, there’s Lacy, who shared his experience of a significant drop in his daily ad earnings. From a $10,000 income stream, he’s now making roughly $2,000 per day.
That’s still far, far more than the average worker earns, but for someone who has built a way of living out of those earnings, it could be devastating. Twitch allowed them to secure the bag in this way, and then without warning or forethought, the rate of earnings has been slashed immeasurably.
Picture this scenario: If your workplace were to reduce your salary by a whopping 80% without any prior notice, that’s essentially the situation we’re in now. Although creators still receive subscriptions, bits, and other donations, it’s not exactly a positive turn of events.
One streamer, TheStockGuy, revealed that he’s disabling ads on his streams because the returns aren’t worth the disruption. He was reporting a 95% drop in earnings – one of the most significant examples of the adpocalypse we’ve seen.
Twitch hasn’t provided an explanation for the drop in advertising income as of now; I’ve attempted to get a response from them while I wait.
