Arcane Season 2 Episode 4 Review

As a longtime fan of League of Legends and its lore, I can confidently say that “Arcane” Season 2 is living up to my high expectations. The fourth episode, titled “Paint the Town Blue,” was a masterclass in character development, particularly for Jinx. Ella Purnell’s performance as Jinx was nothing short of outstanding, showcasing a range of emotions that made her character more relatable and endearing than ever before.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Arcane Season 2, Episode 4.

Key Takeaways

  • Jinx remains reluctant to lead a revolution in Zaun, despite her growing influence.
  • Caitlyn continues her pursuit of Jinx, fueled by Ambessa pushing her towards revenge.
  • Warwick’s debut brings intense action and horror movie vibes.

The fourth episode of Arcane Season 2 commences the second part with flair, employing distinctive animation methods by Fortiche and propelling several key characters onto fresh paths.

The fourth episode, labeled “Paint the Town Blue,” borrows its title from Ashnikko’s original song for the Arcane soundtrack, signifying that it heavily revolves around the character of Jinx. Unlike some episodes in Season 2 of Arcane, which have been brimming with multiple concurrent narratives, Episode 4 eases up a bit and provides ample time to present a formidable new character on stage.

In Episode 4 of Season 2, the storyline of Arcane continues to experiment with time, and after another leap forward, a new normal is established. This shift isn’t as drastic as the one in Season 1, but it sets the stage for events in Episode 4. Following Caitlyn’s promotion to commander, the Enforcers and Noxians have united to enforce martial law within the undercity. However, there’s a glimmer of hope in the chaos, with Jinx gaining support in Zaun after her daring act at the end of Episode 3. Within the initial few minutes, this situation is portrayed through a sequence of black-and-white photos, giving the impression they were meant for a newspaper. The images take on an Arcane touch with Jinx’s graffiti, painted blue, suggesting a rebellion brewing on the horizon.

It appears that the head of the revolution has distanced herself from it since Episode 3. Now, Jinx is laying low. She’s taken to saying she’s “gone” and spends her days entertaining a young friend named Isha, who shares some resemblance with Jinx’s former self, Powder. Interestingly, Isha has been motivated by Jinx and dyed her hair blue, mimicking Jinx at a military checkpoint, sparking hope among the Zaunites that perhaps Jinx is back.

Arcane Season 2 Episode 4 Review

In the storyline, it’s Jinx’s comeback that garners significant interest from Piltover, most notably from its commanding officer, Caitlyn. Despite her unwavering determination to apprehend Jinx, Caitlyn harbors disdain for the prolonged conflict that has led them to this point. With Vi no longer a factor in Episode 3, Caitlyn has developed a sense of peace with Maddie Nolen, a newfound ally among the enforcers. Additionally, she’s gained a mentor in Ambessa, who consistently fuels Caitlyn’s desire for retribution.

Prison Break

In the heart of the underground city, Sevika aims to unite its inhabitants following Jinx’s homecoming, yet Jinx expresses reluctance towards joining the cause. She questions if she is capable of being the hero the city requires. The rally commences at Vander’s statue, drawing together Firelights, undercity tough guys, and Jinx sympathizers. Seizing the moment, Isha assumes Jinx’s identity once more, igniting a blue flare that prompts the undercity to swear loyalty to her. However, this event is abruptly disrupted by a Noxian assault force, resulting in the arrest of everyone they manage to capture. Among those taken into custody are Isha and the undercity scientist known as Singed.

Upon hearing the news from Sevika, Jinx and she promptly embark for Stillwater. Their scheme, which includes pretending to be enforcers and penetrating deep within the prison, is swiftly put into motion. Episode 4, especially the scenes between Sevika and Jinx, showcases Ella Purnell’s acting prowess at its best. The depth she brings to Jinx’s character through her performance makes Jinx more authentic and relatable than ever. When Jinx and Sevika manage to free the imprisoned Zaunites, Jinx is taken aback to find her people welcoming her, fueling a surge of newfound heroism within her. However, it’s not just Jinx and Sevika who are planning to breach Stillwater prison; others share similar intentions.

Warwick Makes His Debut

Prior to his capture, Singed successfully awakened the ferocious being hidden within Zaun by drawing blood, a scent that guided the beast (recognizable to fans as Warwick) directly to his confinement cell. The series, Arcane, has once more elevated its animation skills, presenting Warwick’s perspective using streaks of dark red paint. The introduction of this monster is handled in a manner reminiscent of classic horror films, keeping the true appearance of the creature concealed until the very end, and escalating the anticipation of its arrival by focusing on what remains unseen.

As Warwick makes his grand entrance on screen, the battle that unfolds is truly befitting of his complex character. The intensity increases with thunderous rock music, and the dramatic contrast between blues and reds adds to the tension during Jinx’s intense fight against Warwick. Despite Jinx’s valiant efforts, Warwick proves to be the stronger adversary. However, just when all hope seems lost, the show surprises viewers with a plot twist that has long been speculated by fans. Warwick’s fierce anger abates as he recognizes the face in front of him, revealing that the man behind the beast is none other than Vander.

Episode 4 Slows Down the Pace of Arcane Season 2 In The Best Way

In this episode, not all characters were present, but it was still impressive how swiftly the world of Arcane was transformed within a few short scenes. The narrative in Episode 4 seemed more approachable, enabling an engaging introduction to Warwick and offering additional layers of humor and lightness from the primary characters, particularly Jinx.

Arcane Season 2 Episodes 1-6 are available on Netflix now.
