Known as the Holy Realm or Sacred Nation, this country is fortified by an immense wall that has maintained tranquility for centuries. However, peace was shattered when an army of semi-human creatures, led by the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth, invaded the land. In their dire need to protect their homeland, the Liberation Army appeals to Aizen’s Sorcerer Kingdom for help, despite the fact that these two realms have historically been at odds.

Two centuries ago, I was part of a grand endeavor that culminated in the founding of the Sacred Kingdom. This triumphant event followed our valiant battle against the malevolent Deities, with a Valkyrie Knight standing as our national hero. The kingdom is split into two distinct regions: the Northern Sacred Kingdom and the Southern Holy Kingdom.

What is Overlord’s story about?

The story unfolds within an imaginative “DMMORPG” (an advanced virtual reality-like gaming platform where players can fully immerse themselves) called Yggdrasil. This game is scheduled for shutdown, but Momonga, one of its characters (later identified as Ainz Ooal Gown), longs to savor the game before it ends. When the time arrives, he finds himself still within the game. To his surprise, all other characters now appear to have developed their own individual personalities. With his powerful magical abilities, Momonga chooses to continue residing in this virtual world.

Originally self-published between 2010 and 2012 as a single novel by author Kugane Maruyama, this narrative has since been collected and published in Japan by Enterbrain, with 16 volumes now available. In the United States, Yen Press handles publication of both the original novel and its manga adaptation.

2015 marked the airing of the first season in Japan. Two years later, in 2018, both the second and third seasons were unveiled. Finally, it was in 2022 that the fourth season made its appearance, consisting of 52 episodes. Throughout all seasons, the core team remained largely the same. In the year 2021, a movie was announced, coinciding with the release of the fourth season.

All Overlord seasons can be watched on Crunchyroll, both subbed and dubbed.
