The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Post-Credit Scenes, Explained

The highly anticipated Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in theaters! The 98-minute film is packed with fun references and nods to the Super Mario franchise, plus cameos from other popular gaming characters. It follows the classic formula of hero Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) rescuing the day from Bowser (Jack Black) and his son, Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). And just like the first movie, be sure to stay through the credits – there are two big hints about what’s coming next in the Nintendo movie universe. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Super Mario Meets Star Fox

The first scene after the credits shows Fox delivering Bowser and his son to a mysterious prison. Bowser, now broken into pieces and known as Dry Bone Bowser, tries to escape with Bowser Jr. While digging their way out, they’re surprised by a familiar face: the blue Luma who was captured in the first movie. This slightly unhinged Luma has been promoted to a prison guard! It’s a funny moment that highlights how even after everything, Lumas remain undeniably adorable.

Fox has a quick chat with a Toad outside the prison before returning to his universe. While this moment neatly wraps up his part in the story, it could also hint at a future Star Fox movie. Fans have long hoped for a Star Fox film, and it’s clear that actor Shavo Powell is a passionate advocate for the character. Given his enthusiasm and Nintendo’s careful approach to their franchises – especially after Powell campaigned for a Star Fox movie following the success of the Super Mario film – it seems likely we haven’t seen the last of Fox on the big screen. In fact, Powell’s suggestion was the reason Fox was included in this movie at all. This opens up exciting possibilities for future Nintendo films.

The Star Fox series has had its ups and downs. While games like Star Fox 64 (1997) are beloved classics, titles like Star Fox Adventures (2002) and Star Fox Zero (2016) weren’t as well-received. Star Fox Zero, in particular, was a disappointing end to the Wii U and marked the last time Fox McCloud starred in his own game. It’s been a full decade since then for the series. However, the future of this Star Wars-inspired space shooter is looking promising. There’s even talk of a spin-off movie, and perhaps we’ll hear Powell voicing Fox in a new game, letting us hear that iconic barrel roll. Fans have really missed the rest of the team too – Slippy, Falco Lombardi, and Peppy Hare!

“Here Comes Daisy!”

The last post-credit scene officially introduced Princess Daisy, the final major princess in the series. It takes viewers back to The Gateway Galaxy, a location filled with hidden references from past games. Throughout the scene, fans can spot familiar faces like R.O.B., the Piantas from Super Mario Sunshine (2002), and characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988) – the villainous Wart (voiced by Luis Guzmán) and Birdo. This is also where Mario and his friends meet up with Fox. The main action focuses on a fast-paced chase to recover Toad’s backpack from Ukiki, a mischievous monkey who first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (1995). Ukiki makes a reappearance, stealing from someone else, but Daisy quickly puts a stop to it.

The princess doesn’t speak in the new film, but her bright yellow dress makes her instantly recognizable. Similar to how Yoshi was hinted at in the first movie’s after-credits scene, it seems this often overlooked princess will play a big role in the third film. While Daisy usually appears in sports games like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and Super Smash Bros., she first showed up in the original Super Mario Land for the Game Boy back in 1989. In that game, Mario rescued her instead of Peach. But just like Peach, Daisy seems capable and independent in this growing Mario movie world.

Luigi is a key part of Daisy’s story, and the two are frequently shown as a couple, similar to Mario and Peach. In fact, Luigi playfully suggested Peach find him a date earlier in the Galaxy Movie, potentially implying Peach is already friends with Daisy, just like in the video games. It will be interesting to see how Daisy figures into the expected third film, especially considering the Galaxy Movie revealed Peach and Rosalina are sisters. This new connection raises questions about how that will affect the dynamic between the princesses.

While we’re waiting for announcements about the next movie and a possible Star Fox game, you can currently play as Fox McCloud and Daisy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) on the Nintendo Switch. Daisy also appears as a playable character in Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023). Recently, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of this colorful 2D platformer was released, adding Rosalina and Luma to the roster – a promotion tied to the release of the Galaxy Movie.
