Final Fantasy 14 players can now give more cosmetic items from the online store as gifts to their friends. Square Enix has lifted most restrictions on gifting, almost four years after initially limiting the feature. The original restrictions were put in place to prevent players from using real money to trade items, but have now been largely removed.
From time to time, Final Fantasy 14 adds new cosmetic items to its online store that players can purchase with real money. These include outfits for character customization, as well as mounts, companions (minions), and decorations for player housing. Sometimes, these items are inspired by other Final Fantasy games – for example, outfits referencing characters from Final Fantasy 9. However, some players have criticized the prices of certain items available in the online store.
Final Fantasy 14 Removes Some Restrictions on Online Store Gift Options
Starting April 2nd, you can now gift more items to friends in Final Fantasy 14 through the online store. Square Enix announced that the “Buy For A Friend” option now includes mounts, minions, emotes, chocobo barding, face paint, orchestrion rolls, and fashion accessories. This means you can send friends specific items, even those from past events like Hatching-Tide. Previously, gifting was limited to weapons, costumes, Fantasia potions, dyes, hairstyles, and Tales of Adventure books.
New Final Fantasy 14 Online Store Items Eligible for Gifting (Effective April 2, 2026)
- Mounts (Single Character)
- Minions (Single Character)
- Emotes
- Orchestrion Rolls
- Face Paint
- Chocobo Barding
- Fashion Accessories
Currently, you can’t gift account-wide mounts purchased from the Final Fantasy 14 Online Store. These restrictions began a few weeks after the release of Patch 6.2, ‘Buried Memory,’ as part of the Endwalker expansion. Square Enix explained in an October 2022 post that the changes were made to prevent fraud and discourage the practice of real-money trading. Previously, the Online Store provided items as codes that anyone could use, which made gifting easy but also allowed unofficial sellers to offer items at varying prices. Square Enix also noted that some of these codes were purchased with stolen credit card details. Now, items from the Final Fantasy 14 Online Store can only be used by the person who bought them or sent to a friend through the in-game mail system.
In Final Fantasy 14, each character can have up to 200 friends, and that list can fill up fast. Also, to be able to purchase items for a friend through the in-game store, you need to have been friends with them on the game for at least three days.
Final Fantasy 14 Has Several Events Planned for April
Alongside updates to the in-game store, Final Fantasy 14 is experiencing a very active period. This week saw the start of the newest Moogle Treasure Trove event, running until April 28th. Players can participate in activities like Treasure Map Dungeons and Frontline PvP to earn special tokens, called Irregular Tomestones of Aphorism, which can then be exchanged for valuable rewards while waiting for the next content release.
The next major update for Final Fantasy 14, Patch 7.5, titled Trail to the Heavens, arrives on Tuesday, April 28th. This update’s story will be released in two parts, with the second half coming in Patch 7.56 around early September. Right before the update goes live, Final Fantasy 14 will hold its 2026 North American FanFest at the Anaheim Convention Center in California on April 24th and 25th. With all these events happening in April, Final Fantasy 14 players have a lot to be excited about!
