As a seasoned gamer with memories of countless sleepless nights and countless hours spent in the heists of Payday 2, hearing about the downsizing of the team working on Payday 3 is bittersweet. On one hand, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we might not be getting as much content as quickly as before. But on the other, I’ve been around long enough to know that sometimes less can indeed be more.
According to a recent financial announcement, Starbreeze‘s management team has disclosed plans to reduce the workforce on Payday 3 as they move into the game’s second year of content delivery. They also mentioned that they will be investing considerably less overall. However, they have reassured both players and shareholders that this downsizing won’t affect the quality of gaming experience globally.
Less is More
Starbreeze’s recent financial report indicates that Payday 2 still accounts for half of the revenue generated by Payday 3. This shows that Payday 2 continues to be significant, while Payday 3 has faced challenges in keeping players engaged for a longer period.
According to the temporary CEO of Starbreeze, Mats Juhl, the company plans to capitalize on the power of its branded properties in order to maintain success through 2025.
A year ago, we were celebrating the debut of PAYDAY 3 – a significant achievement for our studio, commercially successful yet marked by a string of technical problems during launch. Since then, we’ve been putting in countless hours to enhance the game, add more content, and expand its features.
Towards the close of the quarter, we rolled out four significant DLC packs along with numerous enhancements to both functionality and content for all our players. In late October, we unveiled one of our most substantial updates since launch, featuring a fresh user interface, server browser, VoIP system, and many additional improvements.
He mentioned midway through his statement that…
As we move into our second year, we’re optimistic that we can consistently provide value to our users while requiring a substantially reduced financial commitment.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed a positive shift in the vibe surrounding Payday 3. Across various platforms, the buzz is definitely getting better. Though it’s true that the game didn’t have the smoothest debut, it seems to have bounced back somewhat. However, the player community has noticeably thinned out since its release.
Starbeeze plans to carry on providing content for Payday 3 through 2025, however, the pace might be slightly reduced due to their focus on other projects. In particular, they are deeply engaged in Project Baxter and Juhl announced that the company is currently expanding, hiring more team members to aid in the development of this new game.
