Tomodachi Life Reveals Why Handheld Mode Boost Isn’t Supported on Switch 2

While Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream won’t utilize the Nintendo Switch 2’s enhanced 1080p Handheld Mode, that’s perfectly okay. The game will run on both the original Switch and the new Switch 2. However, Nintendo has included a feature for Switch 2 owners that will improve the game’s graphics compared to the original Switch version.

Get ready for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, launching on April 16th for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2! This is the third installment in the Tomodachi series, and the second to be available outside of Japan. It builds on the popular 2013 Nintendo 3DS game with exciting new features like complete island customization, the ability to create your own items and clothing, and more expressive Miis – giving you even more ways to personalize your experience and make your characters unique.

Why Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Doesn’t Support Switch 2 Handheld Mode Boost

The new game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, won’t utilize the Switch 2’s Handheld Boost Mode, a feature added in March that enhances the resolution of older games when playing on the Switch 2 in handheld mode. Although it was expected to, Nintendo has confirmed this feature won’t be included. Switch 2 owners will still be able to play the original Switch version of the game, but won’t experience the visual upgrade offered by Handheld Boost.

The game is built to take advantage of the Switch 2’s higher-resolution screen, showing gameplay in 1080p when played handheld. The original Switch only displays this game at 720p. Players with a Switch 2 have said a feature called Handheld Boost can make older Switch games look significantly better, almost like they’ve been remastered. However, this feature won’t be used for the upcoming Tomodachi game, so it’s unclear if it will be necessary for any future games designed for the original Switch.

Owners of the upcoming Switch 2 console can now preview how games will look in 1080p resolution thanks to a free demo of Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, available on the Nintendo eShop. Unlike the full game, the demo doesn’t require a special ‘Handheld Mode Boost’ to display the 1080p resolution, though the boost is still an option. However, it’s best not to use the boost while playing the demo, as it turns off the touchscreen. Nintendo plans to remove the option to enable the boost altogether when the full game is released.

Players eager for the new installment in the social simulation series will need to wait a bit longer for the full game. However, some are finding a way to extend their time with the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo. Once you visit the Where & Wear clothing shop in the demo, your three created Miis will stay home and won’t interact, only giving messages about features in the full game. To prevent this from happening, players can create their third Mii, but it’s important to avoid clicking on the notification bubble that appears above the first Mii. Clicking it will immediately take you to the clothing shop and trigger the end of the demo.
