As someone who’s spent countless hours traversing the fantastical landscapes of Tyria, I must say, the mysteries that shroud this enchanting world never cease to intrigue me. From the Ash Legion’s hidden homelands to the secrets behind the Tengu Wall, there’s an air of enigma that surrounds every corner of Tyria.
Similar to any captivating fantasy realm, the world of Guild Wars 2 has unveiled numerous intriguing enigmas throughout its history, along with responses to eagerly awaited queries. For instance, the Wizard’s Tower in “Secrets of the Obscure,” the genuine background of the Sylvari and the Pale Tree, and the destiny of the dwarves and Glint’s first Scion are among these intriguing questions that have been explored.
Although there remain several unresolved aspects of the series’ narrative that have left many fans puzzled and sleepless, some potential clarifications could emerge with ArenaNet’s upcoming “mini-expansion” releases. Yet, it seems possible that certain enigmas may never be resolved due to the fading threads of the storyline over time.
Malyck & The Other Tree
The Blossom From Another Bosom
It has been quite a while since the release of “Heart of Thorns” and the surprising discovery that the Pale Tree was actually meant to be a champion for the dragon Mordemoth. The expansion seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore Malyck, a sylvari who claimed to hail from another tree. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, one of the writers at ArenaNet, Bobby Stein, mentioned that Malyck’s role in the expansion was ultimately removed.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but find it no wonder why the first expansion of GW2 was jam-packed with content. Yet, this could potentially mean that Malyck will remain untouched, his time having come and gone. However, there’s always a glimmer of hope that the sylvari lore might be revisited and expanded upon again, maybe in an uncharted jungle nearby, thus resolving the enigma surrounding his past.
The Asura & Mursaat
Examining The Rata Sum Connection
As a gamer, I stepped into the shattered remnants of a once-great city in “Eye of the North,” a place known as Rata Sum. Some say these could be the remains of an ancient Mursaat settlement, but the architecture here is unlike anything the Mursaat are known for. Their structures are crystal and obsidian, while Rata Sum seems to draw inspiration from Mesoamerican designs. Perhaps we Asura stumbled upon the remnants of a forgotten surface civilization and decided to expand on their unfinished work instead.
Nevertheless, there are numerous striking resemblances between the Asura and the Mursaat, such as their fondness for creating constructs (golems and jade armor), their proficiency in magic and soul manipulation, and their sense of superiority. As far back as 2007, ArenaNet suggested that the connection between the Asura and Mursaat would be further explored in Guild Wars 2, but this has not yet occurred, leaving fans to ponder why “Mursaat” and “Rata Sum” share the same initials.
Preceptor Doern Velazquez
The Infiltrator From Another Place, Time, Or Reality
Doern Velazquez, a member of the Order of Whispers, is known for his secretive nature, yet even among them, he remains one of the most enigmatic figures. Upon initial interaction with players, they may inquire about his background; to which he replies ambiguously, “Kyrta? Well, yes and no. You understand, the human nation, correct?” Later, he reluctantly discloses that his true origins are confidential. Interestingly, his name, which has a Hispanic influence, is uncommon in Tyria, but it’s especially intriguing that someone living in Kryta appears unfamiliar with it.
Is it possible that Doern Velazquez originates from an undisclosed region of Tyria, or perhaps another realm altogether? It is equally plausible that this name, “Doern Velazquez,” serves as a disguise within a complex web of deception, designed to mislead and unnerve new agents joining the covert intelligence network. Alternatively, the developers may have employed this character as a means of creating a more enigmatic world, suggesting a hidden realm beyond our current understanding. Regardless, despite holding the rank of “Pact Commander,” players have yet to receive any briefing regarding this matter.
The Identity Of “E”
The Anonymous Correspondent With Insider Info
Throughout the initial three seasons of the Living World storyline in “Guild Wars 2”, players started discovering mysterious letters marked as “E”. This intriguing entity appeared to have detailed knowledge about local power struggles and events, sparking curiosity among fans. Given the abundance of characters in the game with names starting with ‘E’, speculation ran rampant, with theories suggesting it could be Ellen Kiel, Evon Gnashblade, or even a completely new character.
A popular theory maintains that “E” was Evennia, a prominent character who went missing at the end of Guild Wars Prophecies, and given the precedent set by the long-lived Livia, this is certainly possible. Despite their involvement in key events, “E’s” true identity was never revealed, leaving the mystery to persist for years. GW2‘s White Mantle story moved on after Season 3, and the story of “E” has seemingly been abandoned, forever relegated to the “it’s probably just a pun” opinion bin.
Bahltek & Utopia
A Visitor From The Continent That Never Was
As a dedicated Guild Wars player, I was eagerly anticipating ArenaNet’s next campaign, “Utopia,” which they originally intended to set in the mystical mists. This epic adventure would have delved into time travel, the enigmatic gods long forgotten, and entities of unfathomable knowledge and arcane magic. A glimpse of this was provided through Bahltek, a character who could be encountered during the Nightfall campaign across the islands of Istan.
Bahltek subtly references magic mirrors, spirit vessels, celestial bodies, and his pursuit of items imbued with a unique “archemetrical essence” from a sorcerer capable of moving across both time and multiple realms. He remains tight-lipped about this topic when approached. After the project “Utopia” was scrapped, the team at ArenaNet still suggested that players could encounter him later in Guild Wars 2. Nevertheless, the expansion “Secrets of the Obscure,” which could have further developed this storyline, has passed, making it doubtful that he’ll reappear.
The Ash Legion Homelands
Ashen Shadows On The Eastern Front
As a dedicated fan, I’ve always been captivated by the Ash Legion and their enigmatic nature, but what astounds me is the staggering absence of information about the Fourth High Legion in Guild Wars 2, even after over a decade of immersive storytelling. What’s more intriguing is that not even a player character within the Ash Legion has access to the basic knowledge one might expect to inherit, given their near-birthright status within its ranks.
At the beginning of “The Icebrood Saga”, players revisited the Charr Homelands and caught a glimpse of an area known to the Blood Legion as their home. As for the Ash Legion’s territory, it is believed to be located east of Ascalon in the desert; however, little is known about the geography, culture, or history of the Ash Land. It’s hoped that Guild Wars 2 will provide more information on this matter soon.
Behind The Tengu Wall (& Other Blocked Paths)
Filling In The Dominion Of The Four Winds
In the world of GW2, there are several gateways that have existed since its inception, yet remain unused as zone portals. Contrastingly, the gateway in Vandal’s Claim now serves as a passage to the Silverwastes. Among all these gateways, two particularly intriguing ones guide adventurers into the Domain of Winds, a region inhabited by the tengu. The Domain is divided into two squares on the map, one near Lion’s Arch and the other bordering Caladon Forest.
Scant details have emerged over the years regarding Krytan tengu, yet fans continue to ponder what secrets might hide behind those towering stone walls. Among the characters in Tyria, the tengu are strong contenders for becoming a playable race, and should they, their realm would serve as their initial domain. Despite their potential to enrich an already captivating fantasy roster, introducing a new character like this currently appears improbable.
The Gods & The Origins Of Humanity
Looking In On The Opaque Pantheon
For individuals unfamiliar with the lore, it’s important to note that the people of Tyria aren’t indigenous to this world. Instead, they were transported here by their deities in ancient times. The origin of these humans remains a mystery, neither confirmed nor even hypothesized about. Although the gods have been largely absent and silent, they have made notable appearances in the game “Guild Wars 2”, particularly in “Path of Fire”. However, during these encounters, they were rather elusive in providing straightforward answers to pressing questions, to put it mildly.
In addition to their backgrounds, there are numerous unanswered questions about the pantheon. Prior to his destruction, the former god of war, Balthazar, placed a curse on all other gods except Lyssa, the dual deity of chaos. Why did Lyssa give Balthazar her mirror, which he used to mislead the world upon his return? What became of Balthazar’s half-brother, Menzies? With the dragon menace now vanquished, will the gods ponder a comeback? Since the death of the god of war, it seems unlikely that any explanations will emerge anytime soon.
