Nintendo recently updated its mobile game, Super Mario Run, and is holding a special event to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Nintendo has been heavily promoting the new Super Mario movie with a variety of tie-ins, including Happy Meal toys, new collectibles from Jakks Pacific, and a large Yoshi-shaped popcorn bucket. They’ve even released *Mariothemed deodorant in partnership with Old Spice to get the word out about the film.
Originally launched in 2016 for both iPhones and Android phones, Super Mario Run was Nintendo’s first ever game for mobile devices. Even ten years later, Nintendo still updates the game from time to time, often to highlight new releases in the Super Mario series. A recent example was a special event for Super Mario Bros. Wonder in March, coinciding with the game’s release on the Nintendo Switch.
Super Mario Galaxy Comes to Super Mario Run
A new event in Super Mario Run lets players celebrate The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Until May 29th, you can complete missions to earn seven statues of characters from the film. Since Yoshi is a key character in the movie, he has his own statue, alongside Mario, Luigi, Peach, Captain Toad, Bowser Jr., and Bowser. You can use these statues to customize your kingdom, just like in past events.
The event features three groups of missions, each offering unique rewards. Each group contains nine missions, and you’ll unlock rewards after finishing every three. To get all the rewards, you may need to purchase Super Mario Run, as not all missions are available in the free version. While Super Mario Run was very popular when it launched and many players bought the full game years ago, those still using the free version should be aware of this requirement.
With Super Mario Run, Nintendo first started experimenting with mobile gaming. At the time, the Switch hadn’t launched yet, and the Wii U wasn’t selling well, leaving the company’s future uncertain. Investors believed mobile games could be key to Nintendo’s success, leading to releases like Mario Kart Tour and Fire Emblem Heroes. However, Nintendo seems to have shifted its focus, largely due to the popularity of the Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. We’re seeing evidence of this, like the lack of updates for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Fortunately, Nintendo’s existing mobile games are still available, even though their development teams are now prioritizing other projects.
Although Nintendo has mostly shifted its focus away from mobile games, Super Mario Run is still available and surprisingly well-maintained. This is good news for players who don’t have a Nintendo console, or those who want a quick Mario fix when their Switch isn’t handy. While not as complex as games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario Run was a significant technical accomplishment, letting players enjoy a full Mario experience with just one hand, and it was very popular when it first came out. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie being a huge success, fans excited by the film might enjoy revisiting Super Mario Run to see what the game offers.
