Key Takeaways
- Toriyama forgot about some major Dragon Ball characters like Broly and Tao Pai Pai.
- He even forgot less prominent characters like Launch and the anthropomorphic characters.
- Toriyama also missed details like Android 18’s hair color and the Super Saiyan 2 transformation.
As a longtime fan of the Dragon Ball universe, I can’t help but be amused and slightly baffled by Akira Toriyama‘s propensity for forgetting details about his own creations. It’s like watching a master artist scribble over his own work, only to exclaim, “Oh, that’s not supposed to be there!
Akira Toriyama has populated the world of Dragon Ball with such an array of distinct and intriguing characters, it’s no surprise that even the creator himself might occasionally overlook a few, given he’s the one who brought the series to life. Indeed, Toriyama is well-known for forgetting ideas, transformations, and sometimes even entire characters from his own imagination.
During an interview, Toriyama admits that his lack of memory regarding Dragon Ball stems from not keeping records about the series. Interestingly, he deliberately chooses not to jot down details, believing that forgetting past elements will facilitate the emergence of fresh ideas. Indeed, there’s some validity to this thought process.
Forgotten Characters
Broly
Indeed, it was nearly impossible for Broly, the renowned Legendary Super Saiyan, to make his way into the official storyline because Akira Toriyama had inadvertently overlooked his existence.
Toriyama, in a post on the closed Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie website, stated that even though he created the designs for the original Broly character, his involvement with the Dragon Ball Z movies featuring him was minimal. Due to this lack of participation in the film’s storyline, he had essentially forgotten about Broly until just before the development of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie. After revisiting the earlier Broly films, Toriyama decided it was time to incorporate the Legendary Super Saiyan into the Dragon Ball universe canonically. Launch (Kinda)
If someone mentioned Toriyama created a tranquil dark-haired character capable of transforming into a ferocious, fair-haired beast instantly, it might remind you of Broly. However, there’s another character from the original Dragon Ball series who matches this description, and that’s Launch.
In a more simplified version, when Dragon Ball Z began, Toriyama deliberately chose not to include Launch in the story. Later, he seemed to have forgotten this decision and felt the need to create an explanation for her absence. Thus, Krillin mentioned that she had followed Tien and was never seen again at the start of Z. Essentially, Toriyama unintentionally forgot that he hadn’t forgotten about Launch.
Tao Pai Pai
In a surprising turn of events, even a well-known and emblematic villain from the initial series fell victim to Akira Toriyama’s memory lapse. Known as Mercenary Tao or Tao Pai Pai in other circles, this character is among those that Toriyama has forgotten, as he admitted during an interview with Eiichiro Oda, the mastermind behind One Piece. Fortunately, Tao managed to make a comeback of sorts during the Cell Saga, where he crossed paths with the offspring of his arch-nemesis.
Goten
It makes sense, to some extent, to overlook side characters or villains in a story. But forgetting the main character’s child takes it to a whole new level. In a now-deleted tweet, Daiki Miki, a designer for Dragon Ball Online, shared an anecdote about asking Toriyama for a drawing of Goten. Unfortunately, Toriyama apparently had no recollection of who Goten was and asked if he could simply draw a young Goku since that’s how Goten was described to him. To be fair, there are several other characters in the series who bear a striking resemblance to Goku.
Anthropomorphic characters
During the initial run of Dragon Ball and the early stages of Dragon Ball Z, anthropomorphic characters were prevalent. However, they largely vanished from the series not long after. In an interview, Toriyama admitted that this was due to oversight on his part, but he also hinted at a potential intentional phase-out. This could be because the mood of Dragon Ball Z transitioned from the original series’ lighter atmosphere to a more somber one, which might have influenced his decision to gradually eliminate these characters, even if he hadn’t intentionally forgotten about them.
Fortunately, familiar anthropomorphic characters such as Puar and Oolong will remain. Occasionally, other characters do make brief appearances, like King Furry during the Cell Saga. As Dragon Ball Daima takes on a tone similar to the original series, it’s possible that we might see more anthropomorphic characters in the future.
Forgotten Details
Super Saiyan 2
During an earlier interview, Toriyama casually admitted that he once overlooked the Super Saiyan 2 transformation in Dragon Ball Z. In fact, he was puzzled when fans began discussing Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 transformation, as he had mistakenly believed that the transformation where Goku’s hair grows long and he loses his eyebrows was actually Super Saiyan 2. Interestingly, Toriyama seemed to have forgotten that Gohan had already achieved this form way back during a previous saga.
Android 18’s Hair Color
During the production of the “Battle of Gods” movie, Toriyama inadvertently colored Android 18’s hair purple instead of yellow. Fortunately, his colleagues spotted the error and rectified it promptly. It would have been intriguing to see our beloved android sport a temporary new look with her hair being purple for a brief moment.
The Pilaf Robot
In the same conversation with Oda, Toriyama admits he can’t recall the mechs that Pilaf, Shu, and Mai operated within Dragon Ball, as these characters and their machines appeared early on in the series, first shown in the anime back in 1986.
