Over the years, the Power Rangers have battled many powerful enemies. These villains often try to destroy the galaxy and frequently create their own teams of Rangers to help them. While some of these evil Rangers eventually switch sides and become good, that doesn’t always happen. Some, like the Psycho Rangers, are purely evil and dedicated to eliminating the Power Rangers of their specific color.
From the very start of Power Rangers, villains who become Rangers have been a key part of the show’s stories. While not every season includes one, the ones that do are generally more compelling. Some evil Rangers are simply more powerful or have more interesting character development than others. Because they appear so often, the quality of these villains really varies.
10. The Cybervillains Are One of the Few Villains to Remain Bad
Power Rangers: Beast Morphers
After the original Red and Yellow Rangers were defeated by Evox, he created evil copies to take their place. Unlike the heroes they mimicked, these duplicates worked for Evox and acted as a major threat. The cyber-villain Blaze can defeat the Beast Morphers Rangers with just one blow, and Roxy gains powerful enhancements as the series progresses.
As a huge Power Rangers fan, I was really captivated by the Cybervillains in Beast Morphers. What’s so cool – and scary – is that even when the Rangers destroyed their bodies, they didn’t stay down. They’d come back as these incredibly powerful robots! It wasn’t exactly the original villain, but they had all their memories and knowledge, which made them a serious threat. Luckily, the Beast Morphers team pulled through and saved the day, even though these Cybervillains never had a change of heart.
9. The Jungle Fury Spirit Rangers Become one of the Jungle Fury Rangers’ Greatest Allies
Power Rangers: Jungle Fury
The Jungle Fury Spirit Rangers started as enemies created by the Phantom Beasts to fight the Jungle Fury Rangers, but they eventually became powerful allies. Each Spirit Ranger embodies a legendary Pai Zhuq master from history and wields their incredible abilities. After receiving training from these former masters, the Jungle Fury Rangers defeat the Spirit Rangers and absorb their powers.
Once the Jungle Fury Rangers rescued the Spirit Rangers from Dai Shi’s control, the two teams began fighting together. One of the Spirit Rangers is notable for being one of the few light-blue Power Rangers ever created, though this doesn’t grant any special abilities. Initially, the Spirit Rangers were a major challenge for the Jungle Fury team, but they eventually became crucial in helping them become their strongest selves.
8. The A-Squad Rangers Completely Betray the Entire S.P.D Organization
Power Rangers: S.P.D.
For most of Power Rangers S.P.D., the A-Squad Rangers are presented as the top team. Commander Cruger often compares the main characters to them, but that changes when the A-Squad’s secret is exposed. It turns out they’re actually traitors who try to completely destroy S.P.D. They likely would have succeeded if the B-Squad hadn’t intervened.
The A-Squad Rangers are all highly skilled and were once the S.P.D.’s top recruits. Even though they’ve become villains, they haven’t lost their powerful abilities. While they may be lacking in goodness, they’re incredibly clever and formidable fighters. Luckily, the B-Squad is there to stop them from causing too much trouble.
7. The Psycho Rangers Are Obsessed With Destroying Their Specific Counterpart
Power Rangers: In Space
The Psycho Rangers were artificially created with one goal: to defeat Dark Specter and destroy the Power Rangers. Each Psycho Ranger specifically targeted the Ranger of their corresponding color, aiming for a final, permanent defeat. Shockingly, one of them succeeded, making them the only villain – besides Robo Rita – to actually kill a Power Ranger. Kendrix tragically sacrificed herself to fix the devastating damage caused by Psycho Pink and the savage saber.
As a Power Rangers fan, I’ve always found the Psycho Rangers fascinating. They weren’t just generic villains; each one was specifically designed to counter a Power Ranger’s strengths, making them incredibly tough fights. Honestly, if Astronema hadn’t pulled them back when she did, they probably would’ve won a lot more battles! What’s really unique about them is that they’ve been such a major challenge not once, but twice for different teams of Power Rangers – they’re easily one of the most dangerous enemy groups the Rangers have ever faced.
6. The Void Knight Is Actually Amelia Jones’ Father
Power Rangers: Dino Fury
Tarrick, also known as the Void Knight, is Amelia Jones’s father and the main villain introduced in Dino Fury. He switches to the side of good after discovering his opponent is actually his long-lost daughter, a Power Ranger. While his story of redemption isn’t new to the Power Rangers franchise, it’s exceptionally well done. As the first villain of the series, Tarrick is a truly powerful fighter.
After being freed during the Cosmic Fury storyline, Tarrick becomes the leader of a secret rebellion against Lord Zedd. He’s an incredibly skilled fighter – arguably one of the best in recent Power Rangers history – and pushes the team to their limits on multiple occasions. If Amelia hadn’t been his daughter, he probably would have defeated the Rangers completely.
5. The Thunder Rangers Are Some of the Strongest Brothers In Power Rangers in History
Power Rangers: Ninja Storm
The Thunder Rangers come from a school connected to the Wind Ninja Storm Rangers. At first, Lothor tricked them into believing the Power Rangers had caused the deaths of their parents. However, after the Power Rangers proved this was a lie, Hunter and Blake joined the side of good and became the last members of the Ninja Storm team.
Similar to Cam Watanabe, the Thunder Rangers possess powers comparable to the Wind Ninja Rangers, though they have their own distinct abilities. However, Hunter and Blake struggle more when fighting with the team than they did as enemies. This isn’t unusual for sixth or alternate Rangers who switch sides, but Hunter and Blake are particularly strong examples of this phenomenon.
4. Ryan Mitchell Has the Power to Teleport, Giving Him a Clear Advantage in Battle
Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue
Ryan Mitchell is considered one of the most powerful Power Rangers, largely due to his exceptional teleportation skills. Even without considering those powers, he’s a highly skilled fighter capable of defeating the entire Time Force team – including Carter Greyson, Chad Lee, and the others – all on his own.
Mitchell, as the Titanium Ranger, is a fan favorite Power Ranger. Interestingly, he’s unique because he wasn’t based on a Japanese Super Sentai character. This resulted in less screen time overall, but his fight scenes were known for being more impressive and visually exciting than typical Power Rangers battles.
3. Trent Fernandez-Mercer Has Some Impressive Powers, Even When Unmorphed
Power Rangers: Dino Thunder
Trent Fernandez-Mercer is one of the most powerful Power Rangers ever. He has incredible abilities like camouflage, teleportation, and super speed. This explains how he was able to go head-to-head with the entire Dino Thunder team, even the skilled Tommy Oliver.
In addition to his regular abilities, Trent can transform into Super Dino Mode, just like the other Dino Thunder Rangers, but his version has a distinct look. He also appears in the ‘Legendary Battle’ and ‘Mighty Morphin Once and Always’ stories. Many fans consider him one of the most beloved Rangers from the original Disney seasons of the show.
2. Leanbow Is One of the Strongest Swordsman in Power Rangers’ History
Power Rangers: Mystic Force
Leanbow is an incredibly skilled swordsman, arguably the best in the series. For much of the story, he’s secretly the villainous Koragg. He only realizes the error of his ways when he discovers Nick Russell is his son. While his story shares similarities with the Void Knight’s, Leanbow’s appeared in the franchise earlier.
Leanbow is an incredibly powerful fighter, consistently pushing the Mystic Force Rangers to their limits – they’re usually only saved by Udonna’s intervention. Without Nick Russell’s influence, Leanbow might never have overcome the darkness, and Octomus could have succeeded in his plans. Luckily, a parent’s love proved stronger than any evil spell.
1. Tommy Oliver Is the Greatest Power Ranger of All Time
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Tommy Oliver is widely considered the best Power Ranger ever, despite starting out as a major enemy. As the Green Ranger, he constantly challenged the original Mighty Morphin Rangers, and his fight against Jason Lee Scott is legendary. After regaining control, he quickly established himself as the most iconic Ranger in the series’ history.
As a long-time fan, I can honestly say Tommy Oliver is a legend. No one’s been a Power Ranger as long or in as many different roles as him – he’s been every color! While others might be better fighters, he’s the most complete Ranger ever, and often feels like the one truly holding everything together. He’s just the best, period.
