I’ve always been fascinated by how action anime and manga create their worlds, especially when it comes to the powers characters have. It’s not just about flashy fights; a good power system really builds the story and the world itself. These systems can be based on anything, but magic is a popular choice. Sometimes it’s simple magic, but other times creators come up with truly unique and memorable abilities. There are a lot of great anime and manga that use magic, but a few really stand out from the rest.
Magi
Both Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and its prequel, Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, are excellent but often overlooked shonen anime focused on magic. Magi stands out because of its well-developed magic system, which revolves around ‘Rukh’ – a source of power similar to mana that drives the world’s natural events.
Different kinds of Rukh exist, and characters can draw on their energy, called Magoi, to perform various types of magic, including specialized versions. This power isn’t limited to just one group; magicians, Djinns, and those who wield Metal Vessels are just a few examples of those who can use it.
Witch Hat Atelier
Witch Hat Atelier is an upcoming anime series premiering in April 2026. Though the anime is new, the original manga is over ten years old, giving fans plenty of time to enjoy its unique and fascinating magic system.
In Witch Hat Atelier, magic is performed by creating spells with special ink and rune designs. These runes are crucial, as they dictate the type of magic that’s cast. Anyone who practices magic is known as a Witch. The world has a rich history of magic, and some powerful spells – even those meant for healing – have been outlawed.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
I’ve been absolutely loving Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – it’s easily the best new magic anime to come out in years! It first aired in 2023, and thankfully, we’re getting a second season in 2026, which I’m already counting down the days for.
Beyond its endearing characters, Frieren truly shines because of its unique magic system. Magic is central to the story, as both Frieren and Fern are mages. This magic broadly falls into two types: the magic used by mages and demons, and the magic practiced by priests, originating from the Goddess. What’s fascinating is that this magic isn’t fixed; it changes and develops alongside society, and its history even plays a role in the social hierarchy among demons.
Ichi the Witch
Despite being a relatively new manga – less than two years old – Ichi the Witch hasn’t yet been adapted into an anime. The story centers around witches and features a distinctive magic system. Traditionally, only women can become witches in this world, but the main character, Ichi, miraculously gained the power to become one as well.
This story’s unique magic system, called Magiks, is a life-force created by magic itself. Witches can unlock new abilities by completing specific trials related to Magiks. This system has a lot of room to develop and become even more complex as the story progresses.
Delicious in Dungeon
Delicious in Dungeon has become a major success in the magical anime world recently. Set in a classic medieval fantasy environment, the show gained a large following thanks to its excellent adaptation of the source material. It’s heavily inspired by dungeon crawler role-playing games, and features characters with classic RPG classes like mages and healers.
Marcille is the primary mage in Delicious in Dungeon. The story features a wide range of magical abilities, and the magic system itself has a well-developed and fascinating backstory.
Marcille’s exploration of dark magic, particularly her resurrection spell for Falin at the end of season one, establishes a unique and captivating magic system. Viewers are eagerly anticipating the release of season two to learn more about this world and its magic.
Black Clover
The anime Black Clover features one of the most detailed and well-developed magic systems you’ll find. In this world, almost everyone is born with mana, which is the source of their magical abilities. However, there are always exceptions – the main character, Asta, being one of them.
The world of Black Clover features a wide variety of magical abilities, including control over elements like water, wind, light, and darkness. Skilled users can enhance their magic through Grimoires, which most characters receive at age fifteen. Over the past ten years, Black Clover has developed a fascinating and well-regarded magic system, considered one of the best in Shonen and anime as a whole. With its return planned for 2026, the series is expected to regain its popularity.

Fairy Tail takes place in a world where magic powers everything, even everyday life. The magic system is incredibly varied, ranging from common elemental spells to truly unique abilities like Erza’s ability to instantly change her equipment and Lucy’s power to summon celestial spirits.
The anime Fairy Tail features magic that’s often combined with magical circles, creating exciting visuals. Although the main Fairy Tail story has finished, a continuation called Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is still being released.
