As a seasoned gamer with over a decade of World of Warcraft under my belt, I can attest to the allure and the challenge that comes with obtaining legendary weapons like Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros. Back in the day, getting this bad boy was a rite of passage for any aspiring WoW player.
Before the expansions, the World of Warcraft was home to just a few legendaries. Besides the famous Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, players advancing through the Molten Core could also aim for another legendary weapon, Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros.
Obtaining Sulfuras might not be as complex as procuring Thunderfury, but this distinctive-looking weapon will still require time (and possibly a substantial amount of gold) for players to secure. However, given the significance of legendaries in transmogrification, Sulfuras is definitely worth the investment, even though it no longer holds the same power as it did during vanilla World of Warcraft.
This article explains the process of acquiring Sulfuras in retail World of Warcraft, a method that applies to both Classic WoW era and the upcoming Anniversary servers. However, due to its relevance within Molten Core content, it will be significantly harder and time-consuming to obtain during this period.
How to Get Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros in World of Warcraft
As a dedicated World of Warcraft enthusiast, unlike acquiring Thunderfury or Atiesh through their respective questlines, obtaining Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros doesn’t follow the same path. Instead, you’ll need to gather two specific items in your journey. First, the Sulfuron Hammer, and second, a legendary artifact known as the Eye of Sulfuras. Once you’ve secured both these items, simply have the Eye of Sulfuras in your inventory while you wield the Sulfuron Hammer. This action will forge the mighty Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros!
To obtain the Eye of Sulfuras, you need to progress through Molten Core by defeating several bosses in sequence: Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas, Garr, Shazzrah, Baron Geddon, Golemagg, and the Sulfuron Harbinger. After overcoming Majordomo Executus, proceed to the central chamber and engage him to summon Ragnaros. Slay the Firelord when he appears, and if you’re fortunate, the Eye of Sulfuras might drop with a roughly 4% chance. This could take multiple attempts depending on your luck.
There are two ways to get the Sulfuron Hammer. One is significantly more time-consuming, while the other will cost you a significant sum of gold. The Sulfuron Hammer can be crafted by a Blacksmith with 300 skill in Classic Blacksmithing. The plans for Sulfuron Hammer can be acquired from Lokhtos Darkbargainer, a vendor affiliated with the Thorium Brotherhood that can be found in the Grim Guzzler. The Grim Guzzler is an area deep within the Blackrock Depths dungeon.
To acquire the plans, it’s essential that you obtain a Sulfuron Ingot. This item can be obtained by defeating Goelmagg or purchased from the Auction House. Once you have the Sulfuron Ingot, Lokhtos will have special dialogue for you. Choose the option, “I’m intrigued. What’s this about?” and continue conversing with him until you receive the Thorium Brotherhood Contract, which initiates a quest. After completing the quest by talking to Lokhtos once more, you’ll receive the plans for the Sulfuron Hammer.
To create the powerful Sulfuron Hammer, you’ll require a substantial quantity of scarce materials, which can be found within the Molten Core. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Eight Sulfuron Ingots
- 20 Dark Iron Bars
- 50 Arcanite Bars
- 25 Essence of Fire
- 10 Blood of the Mountain
- 10 Lava Cores
- 10 Fiery Cores
Dark Iron Bars are crafted from Dark Iron Ore, which can only be mined in Blackrock Depths and Molten Core. Alchemists manufacture Arcanite Bars by combining one Thorium Bar with an Arcane Crystal for each bar. Essence of Fire is commonly found on common enemies within Molten Core. Blood of the Mountain is a rare drop from Molten Destroyers in Molten Core. Both Fiery and Lava Cores can only be obtained from enemies inside Molten Core.
While you can purchase all of this at the Auction House, it will not be cheap. Once you’ve gathered all the materials, you will need to go to the Black Anvil in Blackrock Depths. This is the only anvil that can be used to craft the Sulfuron Hammer.
With all of that laid out, there is one final method for acquiring Sulfuron Hammer. Since it is BoE, players can craft and sell it on the Auction House. Because this item is needed for a legendary, it means it will be very expensive. While the price will vary based on region, you can expect to pay anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 gold for Sulfuron Hammer.
