As a long-time fan of FromSoftware’s intricate and challenging games, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation at the news that Sony might be acquiring Kadokawa, Elden Ring’s parent corporation. On one hand, it’s thrilling to imagine what new worlds and mechanics they could create with the resources of a gaming giant like Sony behind them. But on the other, I can’t shake off the fear that their unique style might get lost in the shuffle of corporate synergy.
According to an exclusive report released today by Reuters, there are ongoing negotiations suggesting that Sony might be planning to buy Kadokawa, a company that controls FromSoftware – the creators of Elden Ring. The report hints that Sony aims to obtain this influential media entity and that a contract could potentially be finalized within the next few weeks.
Although backed up by two reliable sources near Reuters and the transaction, neither Sony nor Kadokawa has chosen to respond to these assertions.
Another Bag
According to a recent report by Reuters, there are rumors that Sony is planning to purchase Kadokawa, the parent company of game developer FromSoftware. This news follows the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, an expansion for one of FromSoft’s games, which has been highly praised and may even be nominated for Game of the Year at this year’s The Game Awards ceremony.
Currently, Kadokawa holds approximately 70% of FromSoftware, while Sony owns about 14%. In essence, Sony owns around 2% of Kadokawa Corporation, but it’s important to note that other gaming giants, such as Tencent, also have a stake in the company.
Since its establishment in 1945 as a publisher for books and magazines, Kadokawa Corporation has expanded its horizons over the years, venturing into the realm of video games during the 1990s. Similarly, FromSoftware Inc., founded in 1986 with a focus on creating business software, also shifted gears towards developing video games during the same decade.
