Call of Duty: Warzone Temporarily Removes Rebirth Island

Key Takeaways

  • Call of Duty: Warzone temporarily removes Rebirth Island from the game.
  • The popular Resurgence map returned on November 18, but was removed just a few hours later.
  • In a new statement, Call of Duty says Rebirth Island was removed while the team investigates “map-specific issues.”

As a longtime Call of Duty: Warzone player, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu as yet another beloved map, Rebirth Island, has been whisked away from our virtual battlefields. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating its triumphant return after what felt like an eternity in the wilderness of Area 99.

The gaming studio responsible for Call of Duty: Warzone, Raven Software, has unexpectedly taken out Rebirth Island, a widely adored Resurgence map, from the game’s playlist shortly after its grand comeback. Although Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 1 introduced a fresh Resurgence map called Area 99, players have been excited about Rebirth Island’s return, which was short-lived, lasting only a few hours.

As Modern Warfare 3 was drawing to a close, Raven Software implemented some debatable adjustments to the playlists of their mode, Warzone, in anticipation for the release of Black Ops 6. The highly anticipated Season 1 started on November 14, sparking excitement among fans who were eager to explore all the new playlists and most significantly, the game’s fresh Resurgence map, Area 99. Inspired by the iconic multiplayer map, Nuketown, this compact, swift-paced map was a hit due to its innovative omnimovement system and the array of weapons from Black Ops 6, leaving players eager for Rebirth Island’s return.

Warzone Removes Rebirth Island Just Hours After Its Return

In just under a week since its debut in Season 1, Rebirth Island reappeared on Warzone on November 18, accompanied by a new playlist update. Yet, barely a few hours after, Raven Software announced that they would be temporarily taking the map out of rotation due to certain map-related problems. On the official Call of Duty Updates Twitter account, the team stated, “We’ve taken Rebirth Island out of the playlist while we look into map-specific issues.” They further clarified that all other maps and game modes would remain unaffected by this issue, with future updates to be shared once the studio is prepared.

Just as anticipated, the removal of Rebirth Island sparked anger among fans. In response to the news, Twitter user Obey Oster commented, “This is the most problematic launch of Warzone yet,” and Wavys added, “It’s amazing that you can’t even get it right for a map that’s been around for nearly 4 years, now released for the third time.” Regrettably, this isn’t the only challenge that has beset the popular Battle Royale since the start of Season 1. On November 15, Raven Software acknowledged they were looking into some significant audio problems in Warzone following complaints from players who couldn’t hear enemy footsteps, while others reported muffled audio.

At this time, we’re unsure when Rebirth Island will come back, so Call of Duty: Warzone players will have to choose between the new Area 99 Resurgence map or the Urzikstan Battle Royale map until then. Unfortunately, many fans were disappointed when Activision announced just before Season 1 that Urzikstan would be based on an older version from Modern Warfare 3, which means there will be no accessible bunkers, no Superstore point of interest, and a fully functional Power Plant.
