Key Takeaways
- MindJack poorly executes mind control in a drab third-person shooter.
- Bioshock offers fun mind control mechanics through plasmids.
- Streets of Rogue provides creative freedom with alien mind control.
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that mind control mechanics in video games have always intrigued me. They add an extra layer of strategy and fun to gameplay, allowing us to control not just our characters, but also their enemies or even the environment itself. Today, I’d like to share some of my favorite games that offer exceptional mind control mechanics, games that have left a lasting impression on me over the years.
Uncommon are games that involve mental abilities, but if you’re familiar with the right places, there are truly captivating portrayals of such powers.
If you’re interested in exploiting your competitors, check out these top-tier games that expertly leverage this strategy.
10 MindJack
Do We Really Need To Talk About This One?
As a gamer, I can confidently say that MindJack, a sci-fi shooter, is a title that perhaps Square Enix regrets publishing. To put it bluntly, in my opinion, the game is just plain bad. But since mind control plays a significant role in it, let’s delve into it a bit.
In numerous aspects, MindJack seems to emulate the trend of Gears of War, as it features numerous waist-high barriers and allows for quick positioning behind cover.
You can “down” enemies just like Gears, but the difference is you can use your Mind Slave ability to make them stand up and fight for you. Alternatively, you can “Mind Jack” them to gain complete control over their actions.
It sounds great as a premise, but the execution is laughably poor. The controls feel terrible, the levels are uninspired, there are bugs galore, and the graphics are drab and uninspired.
Thankfully, plenty of other games with mind control are worth your time and money.
9 Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
An Underrated Gem
I’m not picking on MindJack here, but what cracks me up about its title is that there was a game from the last-gen consoles that shares similarities and surpasses it in every aspect.
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is an engaging 3D science fiction adventure game for the PlayStation 2. In this game, you take on the role of Nick Scryer, a highly skilled soldier who has lost his memory.
Despite the familiarity of the concept, the sheer enjoyment of utilizing Nick’s powers makes it inconsequential. Equipped with telekinesis, Nick’s gaming levels are filled with objects he can hurl at adversaries. Intriguingly, he can even lift his foes off the ground and shoot them while airborne!
In a strange twist, Nick possesses the ability to influence his adversaries’ thoughts, even persuading them to approach dangerous cliff edges. If you’re into time-traveling sci-fi antics involving mind control, you won’t find many characters more capable than him.
8 Bioshock
The Power Of Plasmids
Bioshock is an FPS masterpiece set in the haunting underwater city of Rapture.
In the game’s world of Rapture, massive beings equipped with drills, often referred to as the Big Daddies, exist. There’s a skill or power within the game known as “Hypnotize Giant Daddy.
As a gamer, I find myself taking on the role of a Big Daddy, guarding the fragile Little Sisters of Rapture with unwavering devotion. For a moment, this fierce loyalty shifts towards me, making me their protector in this underwater city.
There’s nothing better than a mobile tank as a friend when Splicers are about, and why fight them when you can use them to do your dirty work?
In the game Bioshock, the mind control mechanic might seem simple, which contributes to its lower ranking. However, it remains enjoyable and fulfilling to use.
Playing Bioshock offers a wealth of enjoyable gameplay mechanics due to its unique Plasmid system, making it highly recommended for those who haven’t experienced it yet.
7 Streets of Rogue
The World Is Your Playground
Streets of Rogue is a fantastic Roguelite, offering a level of freedom you rarely see in the genre.
In the game “Streets of Rogue“, you’ll often find yourself given straightforward missions such as retrieving an item or taking out a particular target. Missions involving violence can be direct but dangerous. You might choose to handle it personally, or pay someone else for the job, but “Streets of Rogue” always appreciates and rewards innovative problem-solving.
Here’s an example of how you might rephrase that: For instance, the alien possesses a unique power enabling you to fully manipulate an NPC’s actions. This can be utilized for destructive purposes such as inciting mass violence and burglary, or it could be used more inconspicuously, like going to a bar or eating out with the NPC.
In the thrilling world of “Streets of Rogue”, I’ve discovered a multitude of cunning strategies, and subjugating aliens through mind control is just one of the many methods I’ve employed to achieve my objectives.
6 Inside
Spoilers Incoming
As a seasoned gamer with years of gaming under my belt, I must say that “Inside” by Playdead Studios is one game that has left an indelible mark on me. Initially, I was hesitant to include it in the list given the potential spoilers that lie ahead. However, for those who have ventured through its eerie, yet captivating world, you’ll understand why I couldn’t resist sharing my thoughts. So, if you haven’t had a chance to play this 2D adventure game, I would advise caution, lest you uncover the enigmatic secrets it holds.
Several elements within the storyline of “Inside” are open to individual interpretation, yet the mind control capabilities you possess significantly contribute to the overall gaming experience.
Whenever you put on a particular helmet, nearby beings will follow your instructions exactly. You can utilize them to assist with heavy doors, and they can even carry you over pitfalls and obstacles. People under your control move when you do, and it takes some creative problem-solving to transport them to the appropriate locations at the right moments.
Navigating through the complex labyrinth that is the world within ‘Inside’, requires managing numerous characters at once. Every bit of assistance will be crucial for your survival.
The title “Inside” is remarkably memorable throughout, making it perfect for a quick yet satisfying read even when schedules are hectic.
5 Second Sight
Another Free Radical Banger
Key Information | Details |
---|---|
Developer | Free Radical |
Genre | Sci-Fi Adventure |
Release Date | August 2004 |
Many avid gamers recognize Free Radical for creating the iconic Timesplitters game series, yet fewer are familiar with their standout single-player game masterpiece.
In the game titled Second Sight, you assume the role of John Vattic, a man without recollection of his past. Throughout your journey, you’ll uncover an arsenal of lethal psychic abilities at your disposal, such as telekinesis. This allows you to toss adversaries about carelessly, much like rag dolls, and with the use of Vattic’s Charm ability, you can even disappear from sight.
In simpler terms, John has the ability to completely dominate individuals, giving him full command over his targets. As long as there are no interruptions, he can wreak havoc from a safe position, and this control extends to his allies as well.
One captivating gem tucked away in the PlayStation 2 collection is the game known as Second Sight. The character designs, movements, and musical scores all bear a striking resemblance to the Timesplitters series.
4 Super Mario Odyssey
Of Course It’s A Cute Hat With Eyes
Super Mario Odyssey is a phenomenal 3D platformer and a must-have for any Nintendo Switch owner.
Typically, there’s a distinctive feature in Super Mario games, and that’s Mario’s hat, named Cappy, in this particular game. In an interesting twist, Mario can toss Cappy at adversaries, gaining command over them instead. Each controlled enemy has unique traits and skills.
For example, you can use Banzai Bills to fly across large areas and Podoboo to safely swim in lava. You can even control a T. rex because, of course, you can.
Each being presents a unique experience, and a significant number of items can be acquired by mastering this novel skill. Manipulation of minds serves as a key aspect in Odyssey, providing numerous strategies for overcoming challenges and dangers.
3 Driver: San Francisco
An Underrated Driving Game
The “Driver” game series is known for having one of the toughest opening levels ever seen in video games, yet the PlayStation 3 version demonstrates that the developers were not shy about thinking creatively and challenging conventions.
In a unique twist for the vehicular action game genre, Driver: San Francisco offers an intriguing storyline where you assume the role of Tanner, who falls into a coma following a severe car accident. After regaining consciousness, Tanner gains an extraordinary ability known as “shifting,” which enables him to take control over any driver’s mind within the city.
In this game, Shift power enables you to drive any vehicle at your convenience, which is simply fantastic! The narrative effectively exploits your newly acquired talent, making it delightful to explore the city as you temporarily hijack people’s thoughts, all for the love of their cars.
The concept seems so wacky compared to the previous games that are grounded in realism, and it’s a tonal shift that we would never see any established IP take today.
2 Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge
“Our” Mammoth Tank
I highly recommended Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 in our beginner-friendly Strategy Games list, considering it offers an excellent introduction to the genre. The expansion pack boasts a formidable commander whose weapons are all centered around manipulation of minds.
Yuri serves as a formidable adversary in the game Red Alert 2, leading a fresh faction. His army and infrastructure set him apart, boasting a distinct style, and mental manipulation plays a significant role in his strategy.
As a gamer, I can tell you that playing as Yuri offers an incredible advantage – the ability to sneakily snatch enemies’ units under my control! And here’s the kicker: Yuri himself might just show up on the battlefield in his omnipotent form, Yuri Prime.
Yuri seems unfazed by matters considered insignificant or ethical in nature. Beyond his psychic abilities to manipulate others, he also employs units such as the Slave Miner for financial gain, and resorts to utilizing genetically altered soldiers.
If that’s not a terrifying combination, I don’t know what is.
1 Oddworld Abe’s Exodus
Don’t Mess With A Mudukon
Key Information | Details |
---|---|
Developer | Oddworld Inhabitants |
Genre | Puzzle-Platformer |
Release Date | November 1998 |
In terms of gameplay, Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus, despite being older than New ‘n’ Tasty, boasts some of the most impressive mind control mechanics found in video games. I’ve mentioned two Oddworld games because both are worth your attention, but let me tell you, Abe’s Exodus stands out exceptionally well!
In his second adventure, Abe’s power to take control of objects saw a significant enhancement. Now, he has the ability to occupy various wildlife species such as Paramites and Scrabs in the world of Oddworld. Rest assured, these creatures remain unharmed during mind-control, unlike Sligs from Oddysee.
He can even control Slogs (angry dogs with LOTS of teeth) and the Glukkons who run Soulstorm Brewery.
As a gamer, I absolutely love the intricate integration of mind control in Abe’s Exodus. The cleverly designed mind control puzzles offer me a unique gaming experience, allowing me to strategize and solve challenges by utilizing this powerful ability in various ways, often providing multiple paths to approach the same scenario. It’s like being a master puppeteer, manipulating the game world to my will!
Oh, did I mention that Abe can possess explosive farts this time around? I’m dead serious.
