As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when it comes to the Resident Evil franchise. The rumors surrounding Resident Evil 9 have been swirling like a zombie horde for quite some time now, and if these leaks are to be believed, we might finally get our hands on it at this year’s Game Awards.
As another year winds down, whispers about Resident Evil 9 continue unabated. There’s been a bit of confusion about whether the next installment in the series would be another main sequel, especially since the remake of Resident Evil 4 served as a follow-up to the eighth main game, Resident Evil Village. Yet, if recent rumors are accurate, we might hear an official announcement for Resident Evil 9 at December’s 2024 Game Awards, and the growing mountain of leaks is becoming harder to ignore.
It is rumored that Resident Evil 9 forms part of a trilogy using Capcom’s RE Engine, alongside Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. These projects seem to be extending the engine’s capabilities to accommodate open-world environments, with the former two already released or upcoming. If true, Resident Evil 9 could soon follow suit. This would mark a significant leap for the franchise since it hasn’t explored an uninterrupted open world previously. However, while changes are being made, some aspects may seem outdated, like the alleged retention of one character with traditional gameplay elements in RE9.
Resident Evil 9 Could Mark Jill Valentine’s Return To The Games
As a hardcore Resident Evil fan, I’ve been buzzing with excitement lately over the rumors about Resident Evil 9. Apparently, these leaks are based on playtests conducted way back in 2024, featuring two main storylines – one centered around series veteran Jill Valentine and another starring Leon S. Kennedy from RE2. It’s also been hinted that Chris Redfield and Barry Burton will be part of the communications team for this dynamic duo. If these rumors are true, Resident Evil 9 could very well be the largest gathering of RE protagonists since Resident Evil 6 – a prospect that has me grinning from ear to ear! It’s going to be such a treat to see these familiar faces again, especially considering that RE9 is said to be the farthest game in the series yet. However, I can’t help but wonder if this leap in continuity might bring its own set of challenges. Can’t wait to find out more!
Jill’s Old Look Doesn’t Line Up With Resident Evil’s Timeline
In the Resident Evil series, many main characters start off in their 20s, but due to the games’ effort to follow real-life timelines, these characters are now in their 40s and 50s. For instance, it is rumored that Jill Valentine, if the leaks about RE9’s position in the Resident Evil chronology are accurate, would be approximately 50 years old. This is notable because while other characters such as Leon S. Kennedy appear to be their middle-aged selves, Jill supposedly retains her youthful appearance from past games despite her advanced age. Given this disparity between Jill and Leon, Capcom may need to clarify why Jill looks so much younger than expected for someone of her estimated age.
An Explanation For Jill In Resident Evil 9 Is Necessary
In the game Street Fighter 6, an older version of Chun-Li is depicted, which mirrors a similar trend seen in another Capcom game. While this may fit better within Street Fighter’s less realistic environment, it appears to be less extreme compared to Jill if leaks are accurate. Jill has notable appearances in Resident Evil 1, 3, 5, and Revelations, as well as the 2023 Resident Evil movie titled Death Island. Notably, her appearance has undergone significant changes over these appearances, particularly with regards to her clothing and hair color. The timeline for Death Island is set a few years before Resident Evil Biohazard, and even then, Jill’s youth contrasted notably with Leon’s growing rugged features.
Recent Resident Evil Lore Can Help RE9 Explain Jill’s Condition
It turns out that there’s a reason behind Jill’s seemingly unchanging age. As per the story in “Death Island”, the T-Virus infection and vaccine she got during “Resident Evil 3” along with additional infections and natural antibodies she developed while in Albert Wesker’s custody before “RE5”, have led to a slowing of her aging process. While Wesker’s mind control device was responsible for Jill’s extraordinary abilities during the boss fight in “RE5”, at least this ordeal gave her something beneficial. If “Resident Evil 9” features Jill again, it should clear up this intricate detail in its storyline, but it ensures that one familiar character will be around for a long time in the series.
