Best Psychic Pokemon In FireRed & LeafGreen

Psychic Pokemon have been fan favorites since the very beginning. Thanks to Pokemon like Mew and Mewtwo – especially in the first movie – Psychic-types became known as powerful choices that could easily defeat opponents in Gyms and even the Elite Four. Now, with new games like Pokemon Winds and Waves coming soon, fans can enjoy updated versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch. These classic games still feature some incredibly strong Psychic-type Pokemon.

Although there weren’t many Psychic-type Pokémon in the original FireRed and LeafGreen games, even a few can really help you succeed. Catching one early on can make the first few Gym battles much easier, and with some training, a strong Psychic-type Pokémon could even help you defeat Giovanni and challenge the Elite Four later in the game.

6. Drowzee & Hypno

Average Early-Game Psychic, Perfect While Waiting For Stronger Options

Located on Route 11 between roughly the Level 11 to 15 range

Drowzee is one of the first Psychic-type Pokémon players can find in FireRed and LeafGreen. While not exceptionally strong overall, Drowzee has a good Special Defense, making it a useful team member in most battles. Plus, its Insomnia ability is helpful against Pokémon like Gastly and Jigglypuff, which often try to put opponents to sleep.

Okay, so as a gamer, I found Hypno really helpful for taking down a few gym leaders fast. Koga, Erika, and Lt. Surge didn’t stand a chance, but it really shines against Sabrina – Headbutt just wrecked her! Honestly, after that, it’s kinda just okay, especially if you already have some stronger Psychic-types. When you catch Drowzee, it already knows Confusion which is awesome because it’s a Psychic attack right away. It learns Headbutt at level 17, then Meditate to boost its attack at 19, and Psychic at level 35. But the real key? Getting Calm Mind through a TM. That boosted Special Attack made taking down Blaine, Bruno, and even Giovanni way easier.

5. Exeggutor

A Decent Mid-Tier Pokemon To Deal With Most Threats

Located in the Safari Zone

Trainers might be surprised to learn that the seemingly simple Exeggutor is a powerful Psychic-type Pokemon. You’ll usually catch its earlier form, Exeggcute, in the Safari Zone around the middle of the game. While Exeggutor isn’t very fast or defensively strong, it has incredibly high Special Attack. Being a Grass and Psychic type gives it some good resistances, but it’s very weak to Bug, Ice, Fire, Flying, Ghost, and Poison attacks – especially Bug, which deals four times the normal damage.

Exeggutor is a strong Pokémon right from the start, but it can become even more powerful with a few key moves learned through TMs. Specifically, teaching it Sunny Day to boost Solar Beam, along with Psychic and Giga Drain, will significantly improve its performance. With these moves, Exeggutor can easily handle trainers like Agatha and Lorelei using either Solar Beam or Psychic attacks, and it can effectively battle Giovanni and Koga with its standard, powerful moves. However, it may struggle more against Bruno, Blaine, and Lance.

4. Mr. Mime

Great For Early-Game Psychic Domination

On Route 2, Trade Abra for Mr. Mine

Mr. Mime might look a little strange, but it’s a valuable Pokémon to catch early in the game because of its strong Psychic-type abilities. While it isn’t very strong physically, it has good Special Attack and Speed. With the right strategy, Mr. Mime can quickly defeat opponents. However, it’s also relatively fragile and can be easily defeated without proper support. You can obtain a Mr. Mime on Route 2 by trading an Abra at a specific house.

Mr. Mime is a fragile Pokémon, so choosing the right moves is crucial. It needs moves that boost its Special Attack, like TM-based Calm Mind and Psychic. Setting up with moves like Substitute (which takes damage instead of Mr. Mime) and Encore (which forces the opponent to repeat a move) can then allow for powerful attacks like Magical Leaf (which ignores accuracy and evasion) or the defensive move Reflect.

I’m really starting to understand how amazing Mr. Mime can be! As you train them, they get these incredible moves that are all about messing with your opponent and protecting themselves. Barrier at level 1 is a great start, boosting their Defense, and then Substitute at level 25 is a lifesaver against really powerful attacks. Honestly, if you raise a Mr. Mime right, they can dominate most of the game. The only trainers who consistently give them trouble are Sabrina, Agatha, Lance, and of course, the Champion. But other than those tough battles, Gym Leaders and the rest of the Elite Four shouldn’t be too much of a problem!

A Surprisingly Full-Coverage Powerhouse

In Cerulean City, Trade Poliwhirl for Jynx

Like Mr. Mime, you can get Jynx in Cerulean City by trading a Poliwhirl. It’s a good trade because Jynx is very fast and has strong Special stats, which make up for its lower Attack, Defense, and HP. Plus, with its Psychic and Ice typing, Jynx can effectively handle most Pokémon types using Psychic attacks, and you can switch to another Pokémon to cover Psychic or Dragon-type opponents.

Jynx is a surprisingly strong Pokémon to add to your team. While its design might be unusual, it learns a variety of powerful moves that let it win most battles. By lowering an opponent’s Special Defense with Psychic and boosting its own Special Attack with Calm Mind, Jynx can repeatedly use Ice Punch to deal significant damage. Players can choose to teach it Blizzard or Ice Beam for extra power, but Ice Punch is often strong enough to carry you through the game, including Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and the Champion.

2. Alakazam

Easy To Acquire, Especially Useful Throughout The Game

Trade for a Kadabra with a player. If possible, catch an Abra on Route 24, evolve it into Kadabra, trade it so it evolves, and then get it back.

Alakazam can be tricky to get, as you need to trade to evolve Kadabra. However, it’s a worthwhile effort! Kadabra’s Synchronize ability is a great counter to stalling tactics, as it reflects status conditions like poison, burn, and paralysis back at the opponent. Considering how powerful it becomes, Abra is a valuable Pokémon throughout most of the game.

Alakazam is often considered the quintessential Psychic-type Pokémon. It learns its powerful moves – Confusion, Psybeam, and Psychic – naturally as it evolves, without needing any special items or Technical Machines. It can even learn Calm Mind, which boosts its Special Attack, making it even more formidable. These moves, combined with Alakazam’s type advantage (STAB), make it a very effective attacker. Its toughest opponents are usually trainers who specialize in Psychic-types, like Sabrina, or those with Dragon-type Pokémon, such as Lance.

Okay, so Mew isn’t available in FireRed and LeafGreen, which is a bummer. But honestly, Mewtwo more than makes up for it! He’s seriously the strongest Psychic-type Pokémon in those games, and I’d even say he’s the best overall. Getting him is a bit of a challenge, but it’s SO worth it. His stats are just incredible, especially his Special Attack and Speed – exactly what you want from a powerful Psychic Pokémon. Plus, his ability, Pressure, is amazing! It makes your opponents use up their moves way faster, giving you a huge advantage right from the start.

Mewtwo is a powerhouse in battle thanks to its moves. Recover is learned early and keeps it healthy, while Psychic is its strongest attack. It can further boost its power with Calm Mind and protect itself with Barrier. Mewtwo also learns a variety of powerful attacks like Thunder, Blizzard, and Fire Blast, giving it an advantage against any opponent. Even after you’ve mastered Mewtwo, there’s still plenty to do, including re-challenging the Elite Four and your rival with a new strategy.
