The world of One Piece is marked by different periods, each defined by a dominant figure. Roughly 56 years ago, Rocks D. Xebec ruled the seas, followed by Gol D. Roger. After Roger’s death, Shanks rose to prominence, leading a generation of incredibly powerful pirates. While the full extent of their strength is still unfolding, the author, Oda, has already introduced many formidable characters – some becoming Warlords of the Sea, and others even reaching the level of Emperors.
Buggy
- Rank: Yonko
Buggy shares a close, brotherly bond with Shanks and grew up with him aboard the ship of the legendary Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Currently, Buggy is one of the most powerful pirates in the world, ruling as one of the Four Emperors, and his strength is bolstered by having skilled allies like Mihawk and Crocodile serving under him.
While Buggy isn’t physically strong, his cleverness and amazing luck have surprisingly propelled him to a position of power. However, when it comes to raw strength and abilities, he’s actually one of the weaker pirates we’ve seen in the world of One Piece.
Gecko Moria
- Rank: Shichibukai (Formerly)
I’m fascinated by the backstory of Gecko Moria! It’s incredible to think he’s from the same era as Shanks. Apparently, he actually grew up in Wano, specifically in Ringo – can you imagine? He was inspired by Gol D. Roger to become a pirate, and eventually set sail. But the really tragic part is that when he heard about what Kaido was doing to Wano, he went back to challenge him… and was completely defeated. It just shows how overwhelmingly powerful Kaido truly is.
After that, Moria drastically changed his plans, aiming to build an army that would win him the title of Pirate King without him having to fight. Many considered Moria a major letdown compared to other powerful pirates of his era, like Shanks.
Donquixote Doflamingo
- Rank: Shichibukai (Formerly)
I’m absolutely fascinated by Doflamingo! It’s wild to think he was running around at the same time as Shanks and even there when Gol D. Roger was executed in Loguetown. But here’s the really crazy part: becoming Pirate King wasn’t his ultimate goal. He wanted something much bigger – total world domination! He was aiming to take control of Marijoa and its national treasure, basically becoming the King of the entire world. It’s a seriously ambitious plan, and it shows just how powerful and ruthless he was.
Doflamingo’s plans were ultimately defeated by Rosinante and Law during the Dressrosa arc of One Piece. Despite this failure, he was an exceptionally powerful opponent, having fully awakened his Devil Fruit, the Ito Ito no Mi, and mastered all three types of Haki.
Crocodile
- Rank: Yonko Commander
Crocodile was the main villain in the Arabasta storyline of the anime and manga One Piece. Not much is known about his history, but he once fought Yonko Whitebeard and was decisively defeated.
Crocodile is currently a top Commander in the Cross Guild and has an incredibly high bounty of 1.965 billion berries. While his exact plans remain a mystery, it’s clear he’s an immensely powerful opponent.
Dracule Mihawk
- Rank: Yonko Commander
Dracule Mihawk, widely considered the world’s greatest swordsman, is among the strongest fighters of his era, alongside characters like Shanks. Though his past is a mystery, he’s clearly dedicated his life to becoming the very best with a blade.
Mihawk and Shanks used to fight each other frequently, earning Mihawk a strong reputation. Though Shanks wasn’t aiming to be the world’s greatest swordsman, Mihawk took the title and has maintained it ever since. His bounty of 3.590 billion berries reflects his incredible skill and power.
Shamrock Figarland
- Rank: Holy Knights Captain
I’ve heard tell of Shamrock Figarland, and apparently, he’s Shanks’ twin brother. People say they’re equally matched in terms of skill. What’s even more incredible is that he has a special agreement with the world’s ruler, Saint Imu Nerona – a ‘Deep Sea Pact,’ they call it. This pact grants him things like immortality, the ability to heal quickly, and incredible strength.
Honestly, this guy’s got the potential to be even greater than Shanks! He’s already showing a similar level of talent, but with extra powers on top of that. It really feels like he could end up surpassing Shanks, though a lot will depend on how Oda develops his character. No doubt about it, he’s shaping up to be one of the absolute strongest fighters in the final part of the story – a true monster!
Marshall D. Teach
- Rank: Yonko
Marshall D. Teach, like the red-haired pirate, is part of the same generation. He spent a long time working quietly on Whitebeard’s ship until he obtained the Yami Yami no Mi devil fruit. After that, Teach formed his own pirate crew and became a captain. Eventually, he joined the Shichibukai, and after a two-year gap, he officially became one of the Four Emperors.
Teach is steadily increasing his strength and reach across the ocean, and he’s now a major rival to Shanks, much like he was when he first fought and wounded the red-haired Emperor.

Loki
- Rank: Prince of Elbaf
I’ve learned that Loki, known as the Accursed Prince of Elbaf, is actually from the same generation as Shanks – he was born quite a while before Shanks, in fact. While Loki is technically younger when you calculate it in human years, they still seem to have a bit of a competitive relationship. I understand they even fought together against King Harald fourteen years ago. Eventually, Loki decided to become a pirate captain and set sail.
Six years ago, Shanks defeated Loki in a battle in the New World. Shanks then took Loki to Elbaf, imprisoned him in the Underworld, and has held him there ever since. Considering Loki previously defeated King Harald and is rumored to have world-destroying power, he’s clearly a formidable opponent from Shanks’ era. With the power of the Nidhogg fruit and his companion, Ragnir, he has the potential to become even more powerful in the future.
Shanks
- Rank: Yonko
Shanks, a powerful pirate known for his red hair, is widely considered the strongest pirate of his era. He’s incredibly skilled with Haki, and his mastery of Conqueror’s Haki is among the best seen in the series. The author, Eiichiro Oda, even draws parallels between Shanks’ abilities and those of the legendary Joy Boy, highlighting just how powerful he is.
I’ve seen Shanks fight, and his mastery of Haki is incredible – he’s proficient in all three forms. Right now, he’s easily the strongest pirate around, and for good reason. He actually managed to defeat Loki in a fight, which is something nobody else has ever done. It’s a testament to his power.
