10 Legendary Pokemon Ash Didn’t Bother Catching

For many Pokémon Trainers, the thrill of the hunt comes from finding rare Pokémon. These can range from differently colored ‘Shiny’ Pokémon to powerful, but not quite legendary, varieties. However, most Trainers dream of catching Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, like the futuristic Miraidon or Kyogre, a Pokémon representing the power of the ocean.

Ash Ketchum, the main character in the original Pokémon animated series, has encountered many legendary Pokémon. He’s even befriended some, or at least shown them he means no harm. However, Ash has often chosen not to catch these powerful Pokémon, usually because he respects their desire to remain free.

Zygarde Formed a Friendship With Bonnie Instead of Ash

Zygarde Needs To Watch Over the Kalos Region

Zygarde is a unique Pokémon formed from Zygarde Cells and Zygarde Cores. Its appearance changes depending on how many of these components it has. When it has just a few, it takes the form of a small, dog-like creature called the 10% Forme. As it gathers more cells and cores, it becomes the more common 50% Forme. With a large enough collection, Zygarde transforms into its incredibly powerful Complete Forme, and can even Mega Evolve under certain conditions.

Ash meets the Pokémon Zygarde, but it’s Bonnie who really becomes friends with it. They learn about Zygarde, especially as the Kalos region faces danger. By teaming up with other Zygarde fragments, Squishy – a small form of Zygarde – is able to transform into its powerful Complete Forme and defeat Team Flare. After the battle, Squishy says goodbye, and Bonnie promises to come back for it when she becomes a Pokémon Trainer.

Lunala Teams up With Ash and Solgaleo

Lunala Saves Poipole’s Home

Lunala, like its counterpart Solgaleo, is believed to come from a different universe. As the main Pokémon featured in Pokémon Moon and Pokémon Ultra Moon, this Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon evolves from Cosmog. In the anime, Ash connects with both Lunala and Solgaleo, but he becomes especially close to Solgaleo, who even joins his team in the Alola region.

Lunala is a vital ally in protecting Alola from the Ultra Beasts, working alongside the Ultra Guardians. Both Lunala and Nebby are targeted by Necrozma, who transforms into Dawn Wings Necrozma. Fortunately, with Ash and his friends’ help, Lunala escapes and teams up with them to defeat Necrozma, the Prism Pokémon. Lunala also played a crucial role in helping Poipole rebuild its home in Ultra Space before returning to Alola.

Zapdos Guards a Powerful Healing Crystal

Team Rocket Soon Draws the Ire of the Legendary Pokémon

Zapdos is one of the three legendary birds from the Kanto region, and it’s believed to live inside thunderclouds or places with a lot of electrical energy. This Electric/Flying-type Pokémon is rarely seen, but it’s incredibly powerful – even a single flap of its wings can create huge storms. Interestingly, Zapdos actually gains power when hit by lightning. Experienced Trainers know it’s best not to upset this Pokémon, but Team Rocket famously manages to do just that in the original animated series.

In the anime, Zapdos appears as the protector of a lake in the Johto region, and it first appears in the second movie. This lake contains a special crystal that energizes the water, giving any Electric-type Pokémon the ability to heal. Team Rocket originally wants to steal the crystal, but after witnessing the power of the Electric Pokémon, they change their plan and try to capture Zapdos itself. Their attempt fails, and Zapdos quickly defeats them with a strong electric shock.

Wild Articuno Are Usually Found in Freezing Temperatures

Todd Snap Wishes To Capture a Photo of the Ice/Flying-type

Articuno is a Pokémon known for bringing snow wherever it flies. Its icy wings can even create powerful blizzards. It typically lives in cold, snowy places like mountains, and some legends say that lost travelers might be lucky enough to spot it.

In the second Pokémon movie, Articuno, along with Moltres and Zapdos, was captured by Lawrence III and became very upset. Luckily, Ash and Lugia managed to calm it down, along with the other legendary birds. Later, another Articuno appeared in the Johto region, and the photographer Todd Snap was determined to photograph it. He bravely journeyed through Snowtop Mountain and finally succeeded in getting the perfect picture of the Ice/Flying-type Pokémon.

Various Moltres Have Been Found Around the Pokémon World

Ash and His Talonflame Have a Chance Encounter With Moltres

Moltres, the Fire/Flying-type legendary bird, shares a fiery temperament with other Fire-type Pokémon. Ash and his friends experience this firsthand when a collector named Lawrence III captures Moltres and the other legendary birds, causing them to become destructive. Luckily, Ash and his friends manage to soothe the birds’ anger, bringing peace back to the Johto region and surrounding areas. This isn’t the last time Ash will cross paths with Moltres, though.

Ash encounters a second Moltres, this time in the Kalos region’s Mt. Molteau. This Moltres stays strong by renewing itself with magma. When Team Rocket tries to catch it, Moltres mistakenly sees Ash and his Pokémon as enemies. But Ash and his newly evolved Talonflame prove their courage and good intentions, convincing Moltres they mean no harm, and Moltres eventually departs peacefully.

Ho-Oh Was the First Legendary Pokémon Ash Ever Saw

A Symbol for the Start of an Unforgettable Journey

Ho-Oh is the iconic Pokémon featured in both Pokémon Gold and Pokémon HeartGold, and plays an important role in the overall Pokémon story. This legendary Rainbow Pokémon is deeply connected to the history of the Johto region, especially through stories about the Bell Tower and the burnt Brass Tower. Long ago, a terrible storm caused the Brass Tower to burn down, tragically killing three Pokémon. Ho-Oh then appeared, reviving these Pokémon and giving them special abilities, transforming them into Raikou, Entei, and Suicune.

Immediately after Ash and Pikachu escaped a swarm of angry Spearow and helped each other, the storm clouds began to clear. A rainbow appeared, and Ho-Oh, a legendary Pokémon, flew across the sky. In the original Pokémon series, Ash doesn’t see Ho-Oh again until much later, in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, when he spots it while flying with Lugia. However, Ho-Oh plays a bigger part in the movie Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, where Ash tries to find it after finding one of its feathers. He eventually meets Ho-Oh and chooses his partner, Pikachu, to battle alongside it.

Ash First Meets a Latios in Alto Mare

Ash Later Meets Another Latios in Need of Rescuing

Ash first meets the Legendary Pokémon Latios and Latias in the lovely city of Alto Mare. These two sibling Pokémon are the children of a Latios who bravely sacrificed himself to protect their home. They live hidden in a secret garden and are looked after by a woman named Bianca and her grandfather. Latios is more reserved than his sister and took longer to trust Ash and his friends. However, after Ash teams up with Latias to rescue him from Annie and Oakley, Latios learns to respect him.

A new Latios appears in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, and just like the Latios from Alto Mare, it’s wary of humans at first. This Latios is trying to avoid Pokémon hunters, but after Ash and Latias save it, it starts to trust people. Despite earning Latios’ trust, Ash doesn’t add it to his team.

The Latias of Alto Mare Forms a Strong Bond With Ash

Ash Helps Another Latias After She Is Hurt by Team Rocket

The Latias from Alto Mare is much more fascinated by humans than her brother, Latios. As a central character in the movie Pokémon Heroes, she’s very close to a girl named Bianca, and can even use her abilities to transform into a disguise resembling Bianca. While disguised, Latias learns about the people of Alto Mare and first encounters Ash, to whom she’s immediately drawn. When her brother is kidnapped by Annie and Oakley, Latias joins forces with her new friend to rescue him and protect their home.

A second Latias shows up in Pokémon Journeys: The Series. Team Rocket briefly knocks her out of the sky before blasting off as usual. Luckily, Ash and his friends find her and protect her from Team Rocket’s attempts to catch her. After traveling with the group for a bit, Latias explains she needs help rescuing Latios, who is being hunted by poachers. While Latias gets along better with Ash than Latios, she doesn’t end up joining his Pokémon team.

Lugia and Ash Team up To Save the Orange Islands

Lugia Chooses To Remain at the Bottom of the Sea

Lugia, the mascot of Pokémon Silver and Pokémon SoulSilver, is a powerful Pokémon that prefers to live in solitude, away from both people and other Pokémon. Its massive wings can create huge storms, but Lugia is kind-hearted and doesn’t want to cause destruction. That’s why it usually rests deep beneath the ocean. Occasionally, though, this legendary Psychic and Flying-type Pokémon will emerge from the sea.

Lugia plays a central part in Pokémon the Movie 2000, where it’s depicted as the protector of the legendary bird Pokémon. When Lawrence III captures these birds and tries to lure Lugia out, Lugia must work with Ash to prevent a disaster. During this adventure, Ash meets a young Lugia, affectionately called “Silver,” and helps it reunite with its mother. Despite their connection, Silver doesn’t become one of Ash’s Pokémon.

Mewtwo Seeks Out Its Life’s Purpose

Mewtwo Prefers To Live Away From Humanity

Similar to Lusamine’s Type: Null, Mewtwo was artificially created with the goal of becoming an incredibly powerful being. Giovanni’s experiment, using the ancient DNA of Mew, worked, resulting in the creation of the Genetic Pokémon. But Giovanni and Team Rocket saw Mewtwo only as a weapon, which led the Psychic-type Pokémon to resent humanity. After escaping, Mewtwo swore to eliminate humans and any Pokémon who sided with them.

In the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo lured Trainers, including Ash, to its fortress with a deceptive plan. There, it created copies of their Pokémon and forced them to battle each other, all while Mew tried to intervene and end the conflict. Ultimately, Ash stopped the pointless fighting and helped Mewtwo communicate with Mew. While Mewtwo didn’t join Ash’s team – it wanted to discover its own purpose in life – it left with a newfound appreciation for kind people like Ash.
