Open-world role-playing games, or RPGs, can keep players engaged for months, even a year, depending on their free time and the game’s length. These games are designed for long-term play, with features like collecting powerful gear, reaching the highest levels, and finishing all the quests.
As a huge RPG fan, I can tell you there are just so many amazing open-world games out there! You’ve got timeless classics like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and then incredible newer titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Honestly, you really can’t go wrong with any of these, so I don’t even think it makes sense to try and rank them – they’re all just fantastic!
Fallout 3
Going To D.C.
Released in 2008, Fallout 3 dramatically changed the series by introducing a first-person perspective and a huge, open-world environment based on Washington D.C. The game famously begins with the player leaving Vault 101, an experience many remember for its bright sunburst effect. After this, players are free to explore the wasteland, pursuing the main story about their father, helping a town obsessed with a bomb, or simply searching for valuable items.
Since players moved around on foot, they had more chances to truly explore the world and respond realistically to what they found, like interesting locations, characters, or enemies. While it might seem a bit old-fashioned now, Fallout 3 remains a captivating open-world RPG, offering deep character customization and a unique combat system through V.A.T.S.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Elden Ring
Prepare Yourself For A Challenge
It had been a long time since a truly excellent open-world RPG appeared, but Elden Ring finally delivered in 2022. Since its release, no other open-world game has matched its quality in the challenging ‘Soulslike’ style, though Nioh 3 offered a similar experience with its open areas.
Elden Ring is challenging, like other games from FromSoftware, but it’s much more approachable than their older, more straightforward titles. If you get stuck in one place, you can easily explore somewhere else, and there are lots of hidden areas to discover. The improved co-op feature makes exploring and fighting bosses easier, but what really drew players in was the rich world and its fascinating story.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus
A Step In The Right Direction
While Elden Ring received a lot of attention in 2022, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, released on the Switch, was also highly praised. This game, a new take on the Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl series, sends players back to an earlier version of the Sinnoh region. It’s a more basic time, before the development of modern cities or the established systems for catching and training Pokemon.
Even simple items like Pokeballs are crafted by the player in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. This focus on crafting and a more open, non-linear world is what made the game so engaging, especially compared to previous Pokemon titles. While it still had turn-based battles, the game moved away from the traditional Gym Badge system, which was a bold change. Some players weren’t fans, but those who enjoyed it consider it one of the best Pokemon games ever made.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Simply A Marvel
Released in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a sprawling and ambitious adventure. Players can roam a massive world with their team, seamlessly jumping into fast-paced battles that feel like online multiplayer games. The combat system is dynamic and engaging, with skills chaining together and characters gaining powerful new forms.
Okay, so the combat is cool and all, but honestly, it’s the story that really grabbed me. You’re thrown into this world constantly at war, and as you play, you’re trying to figure out who’s really pulling the strings. And trust me, there are a ton of surprises along the way – it kept me hooked right up to the very end!
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
In The Glow Of Gold Saucer
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth delivers on what fans hoped for in the remake: a ton of fun side activities. This second installment of the Final Fantasy 7 remake is packed with them, offering everything from Chocobo races and transforming into a frog to playing soccer as Red 13.
While offering fun mini-games, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth significantly expands on the game’s story and improves the already-strong combat with the addition of character combos. The world isn’t as vast as some other games in the series, but it’s filled with plenty to do. It’s a major release for PS5 in 2024, and players on the upcoming Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S will soon be able to experience the popular card game, Queen’s Blood, featured within it.
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Turn-Based Fun In The Sun
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a role-playing game released in 2024 that features turn-based combat. The game is set in Hawaii, where players explore Honolulu and investigate a dangerous conspiracy involving a cult, all while searching for the protagonist’s missing mother.
Similar to other Yakuza games, the most enjoyable part of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is its quirky and engaging side quests – you might find yourself battling massive vacuum cleaners or dealing with gangsters with unusual hobbies. The turn-based combat is also excellent, with a variety of fun ‘Jobs’ to unlock and level up, from surfing to hula dancing. Overall, the game offers a fantastic blend of serious storytelling, over-the-top action, and rewarding battles.
