Steam is offering Subnautica for free from now until April 6th as part of a special promotion. This is the first time players can try Subnautica on Steam without paying.
After years of success, the popular underwater survival game Subnautica is having a moment. Created by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, a studio based in San Francisco, it first came out in January 2018 after being in development for a little over three years. Since then, it’s received almost 175,000 reviews on Steam, and an impressive 96.03% of players have given it a positive rating – Steam’s highest category, “Overwhelmingly Positive.”
Subnautica Goes Temporarily Free to Play as Part of Wider Steam Promotion
Just a few months after celebrating its eighth anniversary, the popular underwater survival game Subnautica is temporarily available to play for free on Steam. You can experience the game at no cost until Monday, April 6th at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, 1 p.m. Eastern Time, or 7 p.m. Central European Time. This free offer is part of a larger sale on Steam for the entire Subnautica series.
During a special promotion, you can get Subnautica for just $7.49 – a savings of $22.50! The sale lasts for a few days after the free weekend ends on April 6th. The Sub-Sonic Edition, which includes the game and its soundtrack, is also 75% off at $8.98. And if you’re interested in the sequel, Below Zero is currently available for the same low price of $7.49.
This weekend is a perfect chance for anyone who hasn’t tried Subnautica to discover what made it so popular. The game is considered a standout title in the survival-crafting genre, especially because it launched in a busy year (2018) and still felt innovative. Unlike many similar games that focus on constant collecting or fighting, Subnautica puts you in a huge alien ocean where feeling vulnerable, being curious, and experiencing fear are central to the gameplay. Critics loved how the game combined wonder with terror, creating an underwater world that could quickly change from beautiful, colorful reefs to frightening deep-sea situations. When you look at all the games on Steam that offer immersive and satisfying exploration, very few deliver the same moment-to-moment experience as Subnautica.

Subnautica 2 Is Coming Soon
Good news for fans of Subnautica: the sequel is now scheduled to enter early access in 2026. Originally delayed from 2025 to allow for playtester feedback and a more complete launch, the delay also became entangled in a legal battle between the game’s publisher, Krafton, and former studio leaders. A recent court decision ordered Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill, the former CEO, giving him full control over the game’s early access release in March 2026. This dispute stemmed from Krafton’s claims that Gill, along with other executives, hadn’t met their responsibilities on the project. However, the ousted executives argued they were removed to avoid paying a $250 million bonus tied to performance goals from when Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds in 2021.
